Song Thrush in Yorkshire, UK

Well spotted particularly in the tree / bush, it does look like your focus points were a tad off as the holly in front of the bird is sharper than the bird, I do find on my K3iii its quite easy to nudge the track ball and move the focus points.

...it does look like your focus points were a tad off as the holly in front of the bird is sharper than the bird... Yes, it makes the song thrush look like a painting. Philip

A mixture

#8 and #9 for me. Time passing; nature taking everything back to what it was. So good.

Simple modification to an old Vivitar 3X Teleconverter.

I had one on the shelf doing nothing so easily removed the lens/inner tube assembly using a lens ring removal tool, leaving an extension tube! A bit of experimenting using it on the DFA 100 macro, I know I lose the aperture control so the depth of field is even worse for macro, but as an experiment...

Simple modification to an old Vivitar 3X Teleconverter.

A good example of putting an old, no longer used item into service again - photographic upcycling at its best! There's nothing wrong with macros and close-ups with a tube on a wide open lens (as the 100mm macro must surely have been with such a shallow DOF). I'm partial to a bit of it myself, as ...

It just dropped in...

One of the young herring gulls that were born behind the chimney of nextdoor-but-one dropped in this afternoon. Literally. It clearly knew that it was meant to fly, but having done the downward bit into our back garden, it didn't have the ability to take off and fly well enough to clear the surround...

It just dropped in...

It's still here! Turned out it had spent the night trapped between my chain-link garden fence and the solid wooden fence erected by a neighbour about 9 inches inside their territory. I managed to get it out this morning without any damage to the bird or me. So it's back to wandering around the garde...

It just dropped in...

Thanks. The foster parent bit concerns me though - children have a habit of returning and expecting to be fed!! When I was a kid my dad kept birds in aviaries in the garden.... budgies and exotic finches. So if ever an injured wild bird was found in the village it would end up at our home for recu...

A walk around our local common

thanks , Lubbyman and john. it is an SSI (scientific special interest ) area having rare species of flora and fauna. Missed the orchids this year but did catch some Butterfly orchids a few years back but not seen any since, saw 18 different Butterflies in one session there but again not seen that ...

Some lenses have their own unique "look"....

Any guesses what lens is responsible for these back garden shots.... .....the answer is on Flickr if the suspense is really getting to you ;)

Some lenses have their own unique "look"....

How about the Sigma 500mm mirror? Michael Sorry Michael - You and Karlo are both a little on the long side  It's the Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 350mm f/5.6 (mirror) (06B) - the only catadioptric lens I've ever really enjoyed 8) Sharp, but not in the clinically sharp style of macro or more...

Some lenses have their own unique "look"....

It's what happens when you put a drop of vodka in the cat's milk. Seriously, I think it is a descriptive term for the mirror arrangement. The huge concave mirror at the back focuses the incoming onto a smaller mirror right at the front, which sends the result through a hole in the big mirror and...

Out with my new macro kit

+1 for what davidwozhere says. A good start, keep it up! :D One day you might get fussy about the flat lighting and highlights from reflected flash, so it's worth noting that the ring flash doesn't have to be attached to the lens. If you can focus and press the shutter button one-handed, the othe...

Playing with toys... AGAIN

Great stuff! :D Nothing wrong with playing with toys, even if yours are a bit smaller than the Harley-Davidsons that some folk play with (yeah, they don't think they're toys, but they are ). For your next project, you might try moving on from Mario to little things with a softer feel. As I ...

On a walk with the SMC-A 50mm f2.

I agree with Flan's comments. As for number 3: yes, the iron post is a distraction. I don't feel it adds anything to the composition. Was it unavoidable? I agree with the comments. Don't be afraid to crop to a different shape if need be Here is what I've done - hope you don't mind ? Peter ...

Swans - Lots Of Them

We took the grandkids to Abbotsbury swannery a few days ago. It's the only managed colony of mute swans in the world and dates back to the 11th century. All the swans are wild. Mute swans do not normally gather in large flocks, but they know a good thing when they see it and are willing to put up wi...

Wrecks again.

Back this morning before the heat of the day, better light but no clouds. K1 and 28-105 DFA. 1. 2. 3. Part of an old pontoon showing huge rusting bolts etc.

Macro Stack

Not bad at all for a first attempt :). As you've no doubt noticed yourself (so why am I pointing it out?), there's an out of focus band near the top which looks a bit odd. Probably due to not having an image in the stack with that area in focus. Beware the second attempt. Focus stacking is a sli...

Macro Stack

Beware the second attempt. Focus stacking is a slippery slope, once you're on it there is only one way to go.... You'll get more critical of the final result, start to see stacking artefacts, try to get more control over the final image etc. etc.. And flowers are tricky because they often l...
