Seasons greetings
Well I was sitting here with the dog this morning when I got a call from the wife back in the UK to say the electric went off at 5am and will probably not be back until late tonight/tomorrow. She phone her auntie round the corner and asked her to bring some matches round so that she could light the...

Focusing when shooting birds?
Went out to test the new 100-300 yesterday. Unfortunately I couldnt get real close to the wildfowl, but shot at 300mm with the K20d there is plenty of scope to crop at 100%. When I did I had a couple of what would be nice shots. Trouble is the subject was pretty much out of focus and I guess focusi...

Focusing when shooting birds?
you may not want to hear this..... manual focus. that's what I use 90% of the time. birds, like people, will tend to sit in the same spot, if it's available. pick your spot, pre focus, wait for the bird. getting af on fast moving, tiny subjects is harder. boils down to how good the lens is and...

Focusing when shooting birds?
you may not want to hear this..... manual focus. yeah I guess so Don :?, actually Im okay about manual focus and use it most of the time for landscape shots. Trouble is when the subject is distant, i.e. the bird is quite small, then isn't it still quite difficult to tell if you are focused correctl...

Focusing when shooting birds?
Trouble is the subject was pretty much out of focus Are you sure it was a focus problem and not camera shake? the SR on the K20D is good but its not perfect, and remember the 300mm becomes 450mm on your K20D. Shooting birds in flight is a major problem for Pentax users  You'd do better to ...

Focusing when shooting birds?
Okay here we go First shot at 300mm f4 to test followed by 100% crop second shot is of a fairly stationary bird and 100% crop, 300mm and f4 which seems fairly soft on the bird, I know theres an out of focus plant in the foreground, but the rest of the bird is still quite soft. ...

Focusing when shooting birds?
I've found that with bird photography the main key to getting good shots (like most photography) is light - and lots of it. Especially at this time of the year when the sun is low in the sky, you really must have a clear sunny day. When taking photo's of birds you need to have a stable camera. Re...

Focusing when shooting birds?
Chirpy Some good points there thanks. Muti-point focus and AF-C, I suppose that makes sense now that you say it. I was on Spot Focus and AF-S so focus could be anywhere on BIF as tracking is difficult. I will try BIF again with the 1.4 TC when I get it and may even try a x2 to see what its like, ...

Focusing when shooting birds?
i think you need to know the difference between a moorhen and acoot first! :D for BIF, forget shake reduction working properly, you'll need a fast shutter and have to pan at the same speed as the bird. if it is at an angle to you it could also cause blurring. you could go for my approach... de...

Focusing when shooting birds?
SteveT Exifs for your bird photos say 1/50 and 1/100 sec. You would do better at 1/300 to 1/1000. Continuous focus for birds in flight and auto focus. good luck bb2

Focusing when shooting birds?
I was referring to the moorhen/coot in the full sized heron shot. Are you sure thats not a Coot? Exifs for your bird photos say 1/50 and 1/100 sec. You would do better at 1/300 to 1/1000. Continuous focus for birds in flight and auto focus. good luck bb2 Thanks bb2, will work on that

Focusing when shooting birds?
Manual focus on the shot you attempted,(Heron in flight) would be just about immpossible using manual focus!,flying across and away from you is a hopeless situation!.Auto focus is the only way for birds in flight, fair enough if they are sitting, then you can use MF,but everything else use auto,anothe...

Focusing when shooting birds?
Manual focus on the shot you attempted,(Heron in flight) would be just about immpossible using manual focus! Were there no sharp shots of birds in flight before auto focus was invented? I don't believe it! Yes I was panning Maybe you weren't panning accurately enough.

Focusing when shooting birds?
Of course there were sharp shots of flying birds before AF!...but comming across this Heron ( I know from experience how quickly they get airbourne), you would have a job picking it up in the viewfinder, never mind trying to focus on it!.......The answer is to use either a hide, which there often are...

Pentax User Magazine issue 1 2009
A really enjoyable read. Well done team. I especially enjoyed the macro item. I'd never before heard of 'focus stacking'.

Pentax User Magazine issue 1 2009
Hello, told you we'd sort out the posting method (at last). I'm interested in what people think we can do to improve the magazine. As Pete is ill, myself, Nikita and Matt have taken over putting the April issue together and have pretty much all we think we need, but are happy to do what others would...

aurora borealis
Saw the Northern lights almost every day/night for 6 weeks! With totally sunless days it added some interest to the trip. I at sea off the north coast of Norway and around Bear Island for all of January and part of February a few years back. As my company was paying for processing, I did get...

Low Light Photography
Hi Everyone, I just got my new k20d and I have to say, I'm still having troubles shooting in low light. My Pictures either come out blurry since I have to hold the shutter open so long, grainy because I have shoot at a higher ISO, or too dark. I took a few pics of my wife, dog and myself infron...

Low Light Photography
When using a tripod and long exposure - TURN OFF SR! (On the back) Ideally you should be using the 2 second mirror lock-up too (which automatically disables SR). When using long exposures - YOU have to keep very, very still too! Any movement from you will cause a blurred image. Keep the ISO re...
