"My standard lens, for the istD, is the Pentax F 28mm f2.8. It equates to something like 42mm on a digital SLR. Not what you would call fast, but It's a fine lens. Auto focus is a bit clunky, though."

That's a thought thanks but I would prefer it faster than 2.8.

"Have you thought about a zoom? I quite fancy a Pentax 16-50mm F2.8 DA* ED for much the same use."

I've got a Sigma 17-70 which does a good job but a prime lens should be lighter, faster & less obtrusive.

Thanks.

Regards, Ian.

I've been using my FA 50mm f1.4 as a walk around lens on my K-7 but the problem is it's a short telephoto lens on K-7 - good for portraits but limiting for getting in close for street photography etc. so I'm looking for something in the 28-30mm range.

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC & the 28mm f1.8 EX DG both fit the bill but reviews have been mixed for them because of softness, CA etc. Or there is the (gulp) Pentax FA 31mm f1.8 Limited which, apart from it's silly hood & knee weakening price, sounds great.

Obviously I want an AF lens. Have you any suggestions or thoughts or experience with suitable lenses please?

Regards, Ian.

In my experience reliability is not a Pentax strong point. My K-7 has had warranty repairs twice but at least the camera was only away for a week or so each time. My *istD took 3 months to come home.
Pentax should be more reliable. I hope profitability is cumulative, increased sales, greater range, more reliability.
Grass is not always greener on the other side......
It was for the bloke whose *istD I got back from warranty repairs by mistake who also waited 3 months & so went out in the meantime & bought a Canon.

Sorry to hear that you've had problems - it isn't the general situation and anything manufactured will always have the potential to fail. However, that's little consolation when it happens to you.

Hopefully all will be fixed and will be fine from now on.
I hope so too John.

"Just sent my four month old K7 in for repairs along with my DA*16-50 in for the second time in five months.
Almost all of my Pentax gear has needed repairs in under a year and takes up to twelve weeks to get back.
I am sooo close to switching brands, if not for the huge investment. (ever feel hopelessly trapped?)"

Better detail in RAW - needs a lot of sharpening to extract it.
More reliability . Mine has been to the Dr. twice. Firstly because front e-wheel wasn't working, got it back to find the AF was on the blink. OK now.
Greater dynamic range.
Less noise at higher iso (>800).
And now I've only got manual focus again as the focus selector has packed up for the second time. I haven't even touched the bloody thing.
Pentax needs more reliability.

"What bothers me about the bike shot is the chimney which cuts through the top of the frame." Yep, that was the part of the BG that annoyed my eye.
