Well - right at the beginning I had said that there were to two views - the "yes you should " and the" no you should not "

I almost said to DarstardlyDarcey that it was a case of you pays your money and you takes your choice

I know this is Birmingham - but I suspect that Calumet in Glasgow would do this too

Thanks John

Now I get it.

OK will probably get a hood for the DA-L next month along with a few other bits and bobs I want .

I'm not going to put a Samsung marked hood on my Pentax lens - would look daft and anyway I wish to be able to sell the Samsung 18-55 so it will need it's hood

OK - all this makes sense

BUT [ here I go again ]

Why the difference in types of hoods ?

my kit DA-L 18-55 doesn't have one

The Samsung 18-55 has a 'flower petal' one [ I'm sure there's an official description of that ]

The Samsung 50-200 has a sort of Flower Pot one - not quite a tube , but it's not far off

OK - so why ?

As I can see from the 3 lenses in my house - there's more than one type of hood ?

AHA

Now the kit 18-55 on the K-x does not come with a hood but the Samsung 18-55 that came with my 50-200 does come with a hood.

So why are some lenses supplied with hoods and others aren't ?

Don't ask me - I'm no expert - look at my nick I'm taking evening classes to learn how to use my K-x properly.

I understand mine is actually made by Hoya but badged for someone else

It could make a very interesting thread

Hi, also bought a Kx recently for much the same reason as Derek and starting to learn, Decades ago when I had a film SLR it was common practice to have a filter (I think UV) fitted which stayed on permanently - as much as to protect the lens as to improve photos I think.

Gazing at my pristine new lenses (bought a zoom as well) - is this a good idea and if so what type of filter should I fit??

Thanks in advance for help.

Steve
Hmmm - I think there are 2 views here Some say you should put a UV filter on and others say don't .

I've a UV filter on my K-x's 18-55 and, till I get another one, I change it to the 50-200 if I'm using that. Sorry don't think I've helped you at all

Welcome to the Forum BTW
