Completely agree - superb set of images. It has been awhile since I went to a grass track event - really must make the effort again soon !

That is the joy / frustration of nature / wildlife photography - you can never be certain what you are going to get but need to be ready for what is there! On this occaision you should just bask in the glory of the first set of images which were superb.

For all that manual macro work (and landscape ) a digital LX retaining the interchangeable viewfinders would be perfect - I would even forgo the in camera focus stacking

Unfortunately I suspect there are a million reasons why it will not happen, but one can dream

The third image is a super B&W presentation. Strangely for me and my preference for B&W for most things except nature, I actually prefer the colour rendition between the first two. It is the left hand side of the image which sways me. The B&W version is a little bright (in film days would have said it needed an orange filter) where in the colour version the blue sky and its reflection in the shop fronts provide a better balance.

I tracked this lens on Ebay as well, but after an exchange with the seller decided not to take the risk. Looks like you may well have a real bargain on your hands.
My previous experience with the Sigma 500mm was that it did need to be stopped down to get really sharp images so I expect that is the same with the 800mm
