Thanks for all the comments. I returned to Linford Yesterday to try & get some more images; only one dragonfly was left; the rest had cleared off.
On the first visit, there must have been a dozen or so flying about over the reed bed just outside of the Bird hide.

Aha, a camera for macro. Perfect! AF is just unnecessary clutter, weight and expense when looking at little things. Unless it can be used for in-camera focus stacking, in which case perfect again! (And I believe would be a first for a non-mirrorless camera.)

Unfortunately I suspect there are a million reasons why it will not happen, but one can dream

My previous experience with the Sigma 500mm was that it did need to be stopped down to get really sharp images so I expect that is the same with the 800mm

Technical quality on all three is excellent so it answers your question on the pairing of lens and TC with a resounding yes.
A little jealous of the first image - my pear trees (conference and desert) have decided to take a year off! Probably felt they worked too hard last year when we had a bumper crop

There can only ever be an impression of movement in a still image, often obtained by the methods you suggest - But with these images the impression of movement is created by dust trails and chunks of mud being thrown up. Overall a really good set, executed with a particular technique that works really well (IMHO)
