Not at my computer now. Is this just a file that you add to the directory?

I haven't compared the MX-1 to the larger sensor alternatives, and, all else being equal I would prefer a larger sensor, but that goes without saying. What I can say is that I've been very pleasantly surprised by the quality and capabilities of the MX-1, even with the frustratingly slow write speeds. Through ISO 400 it is very clean and even ISO 800 isn't bad and easy to clean up in post. The fast lens though means that you don't have to go up to ISO 800 as often as you might otherwise have to. For me, the fast lens is a real winner.

Regards from the other side of the pond.

I got mine a few weeks ago, and it is an impressive little camera, albeit the write speed in RAW is infuriatingly slow. The lens and sensor are quite impressive though.

My younger one shot at ISO 400. I could have applied additional sharpening to the eyes if I sent it to another processor like Paint Shop Pro, PSE or GIMP.

I wish they would make a micro 4/3 camera like this with an 18-200 lens, which granted would be bigger, but if this quality could be maintained (plus hot shoe and faster write speeds), it would be easy to leave the heavy guns at home for the most part. But I digress.

Well, I got mine...and one thing I noticed that struck me as strange.

I have my camera set to shoot RAW only, but when I change the image (megapixel) size, the number of shots left changes on the camera. In my experience, you only have one size for RAW and any changes you make to the image size only impact the JPEGs. I would understand this happening if I had it set to RAW+ or JPEG. But, I would have thought it would have no impact when I only select RAW.

There is one way to check if this is really what is happening of course. Change the size and see if it impacts the DNG file sizes that come out.

Has anyone experimented with it yet?

Very punchy images with nice detail. I ordered one last night after being swayed by postings on the board. I heard that the write speed when shooting RAW is very slow though. Hope it's not as bad as all that.

Well, partly based on the IQ I saw here, I went ahead last night and placed an order for an MX-1. Looking forward to getting it!

Seeing people walking around New York with DSLRs is quite common. It's hard to go a block or two without seeing them all around you, especially in mid-town where I work. I just cant help noticing when i pop out to grab some lunch. I'd say the overwhelming majority are canons or Nikons, no surprises there, almost to the exclusion of the rest of the camera producing world. I also have nikon, I added pentax later on and have become a big fan.

Your comment about coming away with the idea that everyone was using pentax these days is interesting (wondering where) as unfortunately based on their (lack of) presence here, you might think they were no longer in business.

Steve

Sometimes I wonder if the bet they made was that a complete lack of marketing and promotion was sufficient. Here in the US, at least in the New York area, seeing a Pentax is such a rarity that when I see one I almost want to stop the person and ask how they heard about the brand (and run the risk of looking like a lunatic). Sometimes I really wonder how they keep afloat. Even when I was in France this summer the number of Pentaxes I saw was so few that I could have counted them on one hand. Perhaps it is different in the UK and elsewhere, but this is my experience so far.

Don't mean to be a pain by asking too many questions, but with the k01 it can be difficult to see the image in the LCD when the sun is reflecting strongly off of one's face (I use an LCD shade to help). It seems more like a mirror than a device for framing a shot when that happens. Do you have a similar problem with the MX-1? And, how useful is the tilting LCD in these cases?

One more thing. I posed the question above about the MX-1 vs the Lumix LX-7. I found this review that shows side-by-side comparisons, and if it was well conducted, the MX-1 is less noisy and holds detail better as you move up the iso ladder.

Thanks
