A few recent MX-1 snaps

As mentioned in another thread, I recently travelled light, with the MX-1 and Fuji X100, leaving the dSLR kit behind. The MX-1 was great fun to use, and I'm more than happy with the results. A few examples:

Inside King Arthur's bakery, Norwich Vermont (ISO100 - that f1.8 lens really helps indoors):

In the right circumstances, blurred backgrounds are possible, and colours and contrast rather pleasing to my eye at least:

I tried hard to get some shots of the Perseids meteor shower but failed miserably due to a combination of clouds and sheer bad timing. But I'm quite pleased with this shot of a different part of the sky (ISO640) as a consolation prize:




Obviously it's not as capable as a larger sensor camera, but the MX-1 has lots of controls available to those of us who prefer to stray away from the automatic settings, and does a pretty decent job. The battery lasted a lot longer than I expected too - two of them lasted all week without recourse to recharging.

Yes very nice shots indeed, and nice processing.

I'm itching for something mid range, but although I find it ugly I kind of fancy a K-01 and stick one of my A 50 or A 28 lenses on it.

Well if you get a K-01 I hope you at least really go for it in style and buy a yellow one! Not sure I'd go for such a large body as a "mid range" though - not terribly much smaller than your K-5s...whereas the MX-1 is very noticeably more compact. IQ from K-01 would be appreciably better when the going gets tough, but I'm impressed by what the MX-1 can do. More than good enough for many purposes. The cracking lens really helps.

I took a K-01 on holiday for two weeks, along with my K-5IIs and K-5. I have to say I loved using it and found it excellent for certain types of shots, especially indoors using a manual focus lens where the results were spectacular due to the focus peaking which makes MF as easy to use as AF and in fact makes it easier in very poor light. I was finding I could accurately focus a Pentax-M 50mm F1.4 when used wide open - this is virtually impossible with a K-5 or K-5IIs!!

Also, the lack of a mirror eliminates mirror induced shake and this means it is easier to get sharp images at very low shutter speeds. I don't find the K-01's relatively large size an issue and it is easy to shoot one-handed with a AF lens, such as the excellent DA XS 40mm pancake that came with the camera. IQ is great, as good as a K-5.

Very punchy images with nice detail. I ordered one last night after being swayed by postings on the board. I heard that the write speed when shooting RAW is very slow though. Hope it's not as bad as all that.
