It's just one of those mountain days which are all too common in our latitude: grey skies, flat light, slight haze. You can take record shots and enjoy just being there, but it's nigh on impossible to take a decent landscape. In these circumstance I often concentrate on small details in the general scene.

As has been noted, you need a good contrasty colour original to arrive at a punchy mono conversion. You've done a pretty good job with what was available, Simon.

There are two excellent landscape photographers in your area, one has a gallery in Criccieth, one in Caernarvon. They have the obvious benefit of being able to get out and take their shots when conditions are conducive, often returning to favoured spots at different times and seasons. And it shows!

The rest of us just have to strike it lucky, so to speak, with the limited time we ahve available. This, I feel matters so much more than exotic equipment or even a discerning eye!
Thanks for the detailed feedback Andrew, I'm guessing you missed my other thread though (link below) - this shot was the last one taken on a wonderful morning, the haze built gradually

Question.

In the first one, the reflection is almost as bright as the mountain, yet the reflected snow isn't white at all.

Unlike the 3rd, 4th and 5th ones, where it is.

Why is that?
Good question Chris & one I can't fully answer - I've googled it myself and apparently it's to do with the intensity of the reflected light, in certain cases it can greatly increase saturation, seems to make sense - it's the first time I've seen it so intense so must be to do with a combination of the strong sunrise and snow - here's another one, this & the one above were the very first two shots of the day, taken 10 minutes apart and the only two with the "effect".

I've seen a shot very similiar from another guy based in North Wales taken from the same location and co-incidentally virtually the same time of year:

Usually a fan, Simon, as you know. Not this time

Way too busy, I reckon. Much too difficult to see what I'm looking at - losing the colour seems to remove important information.

And there's no real form that is emphasised by the removal of distracting colour.

So it's not for me at all I'm afraid.

I'd quite like to see the colour version, just to see where it came from ...
Thanks Chris, agree with you - I quite like the composition but it was one of the last photos taken during the morning and the haze had removed any decent lighting - here's the original, flat & lifeless.

Must admit though, I'm been totally greedy...delighted that I caught as many shots as I did in such great conditions

Thanks for the compliment Simon. Can I ask what lens were you using?
No problem...mainly the DA12-24 but a couple with the DA 17-70

Nice shot...I was in the middle of Snowdonia for sunrise yesterday at around -4 and the K5 worked perfectly

Excellent shots and I would have been pleased just for one of your photo's of Snowdon which I climbed last August, but it rained all day, and every day for 3 days
Thanks,

The last couple of summers have been pretty awful for photography, rain in August is pretty much the norm as Stuey says - I take by far the most photographs in the winter months between October & April, last year I only took 5 photos in the summer months and those were whilst having a wander around the Dinorwig slate quarry

Last photo from my Snowdon set, by this time the haze had built and the lighting had gone a little flat, just tried a B&W conversion out of interest - let me know what you think?

thanks

Here's a few more shots I've now processed, still a few left. I've posted them by the time they were shot, the light changed quite quickly and a slight haze appeared a little later.

All taken with Pentax 12-24, mainly at 12mm - it's actually the first time I've used the lens to take quite so many photos.

Thanks guys,
was only using f22 to try to slow the shutter speed down for the water movement.
I do however think I could do with using wider apperture, what would you recommend Simon? Any advice gratefully received!

The pier is at southwold and is a very nice location! I love it down there and it's not to far from me!
It's probably fine Tom , just thought I'd mention it - a polariser/ND filter would reduce the light (polariser by 2 stops) so give you a bit more flexibility with aperture, you'll rarely need much beyond F16 and most of the time F11 will probably be ideal.
