Are we really adding to image quality with these filters, or at least would we not obtain the same quality with intelligent software adjustments and merging of different exposures (if the DR was that high)??
It really depends on your "ethos"...if you prefer been out and about and making every effort to capture the best possible image you can at the time then filters are essential, if you don't mind spending more time in processing and to differing degrees "manufacturing" images then filters are not always essential - personally I'm very much of an "in camera" way of thinking but it's each to their own - I'll leave it there anyway as I don't want the OPs thread to dissolve into an off topic debate

My take on this, also speaking from past experience, is go straight for the best which IMHO is LEE..I initially bought Cokin, then Hitech and should really have just gone with Lee from day one.

The hard/soft grad decision can be a little confusing but with crop sensor DSLRs the graduation line on a hard grad is much less obvious than you might imagine, it's only really evident at very short focal lengths (10-14mm approx). 99% of the time I use either a 2 or 3 stop Hard NDgrad.

A polariser is a great filter to have with you as is a standard ND to reduce that shutter speed, although a polariser also does this by approx 2 stops.

Some great photos on you website too, Simon. I'm feeling inspired just looking at this stuff!
Thanks...just being out in wonderful scenery hits the spot for me, don't think I'll ever be without inspiration & having visited Switzerland a couple of years ago I'm certain you'll soon discover yours if you get back out there!!

Thanks again for the comments...some a little too generous I think but nice just the same

The 3rd shot owes much to the K5's ability to recover shadow detail as the scene was very strongly backlit & grads were not much help. I deliberately underexposed by 3/4 stops to retain the highlights, recoving the detail in the walls resulted in the blue tint to the water...I could have corrected it in processing but thought it looked better as is.....I appreciate it's not to everyone taste as it's not usually to mine but I think the location lends itself to the processing

Thanks for the feedback/comments...

1 is probably more of a record shot than anything, the colours were so intense on the mountain I just wanted to capture them..I do have a wider shot which is a stronger composition but doesn't quite emphasise the colour as much

The last is my first try with the Lee 10 stop and 99% of the time I'm with you on this Gwyn, I do prefer more detail in flowing water...having said that for some reason I quite like this one as combined with the backlighting I think it gives it a fantasy look which is just something a little different for me

I think the recommendation for a workshop etc is a good one, if you're struggling for inspiration I don't think a book will provide it

Fortunately the weather turned out better than expected this morning so I managed a couple of sunrise photographs at Llyn Crafnant. I always went to Fairy Glen near Betws Y Coed and gave my Lee 10 stop it's first outing.
