Normally they are very reliable and have no widely reported issues, sounds like it could be sensor failure which is unlucky in your case...take it back to the dealer and I'm sure it will be sorted asap

I can't see how this actually makes much difference, given that the profiling device is measuring light from the screen and itself blocks outside light from reaching the measured part of the screen? That said it can't do any harm.

I suspect it is the act of editing in consistent lighting conditions that is important here. I do soft proof myself but for general work edit whenever I have time available irrespective of lighting conditions - taking the view that I'm going to end up viewing the prints themselves under continuously changing light conditions anyway and I've only got myself to please.
This explains it better than I can...

Thanks everyone,

The shot was taken with the K5 & DA17-70 with a Lee 2 stop NDgrad to reduce the glare from the sun on Snowdon and a Heliopan polariser to give it a little more impact...the rich colours in the reflection must be due to a combination of the polariser and the frozen lake, everywhere except the snowdon reflection was frozen over.

I was even more pleased as the editor mentioned they have their own pro togs who take most of their photographs for the magazine but he'd seen this one on my website and really wanted to use, he willingly parted with cash too which is getting less and less common with magazines, most of them wanting your photography for free these days

For anyone who buys Trail magazine you might recognise the photo on the front cover this month (Spring issue), it's a cropped version of one of my Snowdon photographs

Why not just do grads in software? You can place them much more accurately, add multiple grads at different angles and intensity. Ans you're not just restricted to diminishing exposure.... you can brighten, change contrast, shadow and highlights, noise reduction, change temperature, tint, saturation and so on.
It's a personal preference..on the lines of the other thread last week, many (me included)get much more satisfaction from capturing the scene in front of them as accurately as possible and minimising time spent on a PC...I don't see the point of messing around in software when a well placed filter or two produces excellent results

Each to their own

Just a heads-up on an article that's coming up in a future issue of What Digital Camera magazine, not sure which yet put will post the info when I have it.

I've just sent off a few words and some photos relating to my previous ownership of the K20D, looks like other past owners have too..think the article is looking at the K20D as a secondhand purchase option.

Another vote for the Pentax 55-300...I've owned the tamron and sigma alternatives...the tamron is sharp but has too much ca/pf and the sigma is soft above 240mm....the Pentax is very sharp and has minimal pf/ca...no contest
