45, but I really had to think about it......
Retired and trying to get the most out of the FoMoCo pension fund.

The advice about polarisers started in the era of AF film cameras, and became the "received wisdom" that passed onto DSLR users.
It seems it may well not be true any more.
Other than changing the blue in clouds, and removing the reflections caused by glass and water, how much do you now use a circular polariser?

Peter

Personally, I think its a sad indictment of modern times that such a superb camera as the K20D has had a production life of only 18 months. Compare that to the older film cameras (K1000, ME, MX etc.) and it is disgraceful, I think.
To try to keep abreast of modern technology, is not always possible, unless you have untold amounts of cash,
I would suggest that,"If it works for you and does the things that you require", why change or replace it.
Cameras are now being superceeded at an alarming rate, just as computers are.
For myself being retired, and living on just a pension, I can't afford to replace my K20D, and it performs fine, and takes great photos.
So be happy with your camera, I am!
PS If Pentax would like to donate a K7 for me to use I would not turn them down.
Regards,
Peter

OK, I know the world's moving on, but wouldn't it be nice if we could have a new film camera but with all the updates in technology that the digitals use like more advanced AF etc. Don't suppose anyone knows whether Pentax have got anything in the pipeline? Alternatively, if we show there's enough demand perhaps wishes do come true?!
Coupled with the fact that repairs to 35mm SLR's, cost more than the camera is worth,(like my MZ7 with a deceased shutter), and that slowly 35mm film will cease to be available, also the developing costs are likely to go through the roof as it is no longer a common medium for photography.
kind regards,
Peter.

Hi,
I have an SF7 which has been sitting on the shelf since I started digital photography, about eight years ago. I have been checking it periodically and did so last weekend, when I found that the rubber eyecup had started to decompose, leaching a sticky goo on which was growing a white mould. The mould had spread to the nearby plastic body. I removed the eyecup (it fell apart in my fingers!) and cleaned the camera with Dettox (no idea whether this actually kills mould), then left the camera and lens to air in room well away from the rest of my gear.
I usually keep silica gel packs with my gear, but for some stupid reason left the SF7 in the leather case (the kind that fits flush to the lower half of the body) and without silica. Very remiss. I suspect that the rubber started to decompose first (ever found an old rubber band in the bottom of a drawer), creating the conditions for the mould to grow, rather than the camera getting damp then the mould growing and 'attacking' the rubber. The room and all of my other gear is dry and clean.
Is there anything else I should do to clean the camera and lens? If no further mould appears in the next couple of weeks, can I assume it is safe to mix with the rest of my gear (I was thinking of putting the lens on my old *ist DS)?
I don't know what developments in rubber/plastics there have been in the twenty years since I bought the SF7, but I wonder, can we expect similar aging issues with the rubber parts on our DSLRs and weather resistant lenses? Will a service with full seal replacement by necessary periodically, say every ten years? What with new gear out every year, it's hard to picture such a lifespan for a DSLR, but I won't be buying every new model or even every other, and I certainly expect lenses to last decades. Does anyone here have experience of maintaining gear with rubber seals over this length of time?
Any advice and information appreciated,
Derek.
Kind regards,
Peter.
Hi all,
I am considering picking up a more advanced body... The K20D is in my sights of course, and so is the new K7. The K7 is the newest model with video, a lighter body etc., but costs more than twice as much as the K20D for which there are really nice deals available now on SRS. I am considering the K-7 + 18-55 versus K20D + 16-50.
Would you think it is worth going for the latest K7 over the bargain K20D? Better to save on the body and spend more on yet more glass?
I have a third option, of course, and that is to just keep on shooting with my K100D and only pick up a new body when it dies...
Cheers!

I wasn't able to find a proper body cap new. In the end, the cap from 1.4x TC I bought is now in service and the TC has the Pringles lid.
I notice that SRS do now have K mount body caps, but they are also selling the white ones as body caps.
Just my own opinion, but having bought Pentax'es flagship body as it was at the time, somehow the expression "Hap'orth of tar" came to mind.
I have owned 4 Pentax cameras, and the " Body Cap" is as John says a transit cap!
It keeps the crap out of new cameras until the new purchaser, buys the camera and fits a lens onto it.
I hope I'm not missing something here, but it is only a kind of plug after all, and to the best of my knowledge, they are all the same either in black or white plastic, and fit the Pentax range!
Regards,
Peter.
