TBH I am questioning the sanity of buying into the SW150 system, dictated by the 15-30mm lens, the kit and adaptors are all bulky whereas the SW100 system would fit on the other lenses and useable from 24mm upwards. I don’t often zoom out to 15mm in situations where filters are needed and my bag would have more space as a result.

Thanks both, I use better quality UV filters on my other lenses when on the beach as well as a hood as wind-blown sand and salt spray aren’t glass-friendly and laziness means they get left on. In those locations I get a bit blasé (I.e. smug) with the Pentax WR and don’t mind getting close to the surf, the windier the better!

What lens protection filters do you use, if any? I tend to use UV filters to protect the lens and avoid repeatedly cleaning it, but have found they can have an adverse effect. The worst affected is the macro 100mm, I spent a happy hour photographing insects in Cornwall only to find they are all poorly defined when viewed on the computer. Yesterday I took some without the filter and they were much better - see Gallery. As the glass is well recessed behind the front ring it is probably safe to leave the filter off but for other lenses I am wondering whether proper lens protection filters are better. What do others think?

Just a quick question around the Lee system,
Have they come up with a cpl or is it still a square cpl, and how do you find it in real world situations. Is it a hindrance when using grads or does it just not crop up ?
It’s a square polariser so with a grad you only have 90 degree rotation options, and fits in front.

I am with Pete, the Lee Filters SW 150 system. Also use adapter for the system on other lenses. As the glass on these is through-coloured and the light has greater thickness to pass through you will notice vignetting at very wide angles with six stop and ten stop filters, and also the glass imparts a bluish colour. Funnily enough these aren’t mentioned by the pro users on YouTube. The issues can be rectified in Lightroom and not so noticeable with ND grads, and to counter these issues Lee have introduced a higher price range of stoppers which are surface coated and colour neutral. If you are looking at a filter system it would be worth finding how they are composed. I would finally add that if you keep the mounting ring permanently on the lens as Lee suggest it adds considerably to the space taken in the bag so for that reason I tend not to.

Good decision to get up and out, Great results Maybe a grad ND though next time Rob....
I had some with me but didn't judge them necessary, rightly or wrongly. Also it was hard enough in the wind without adding a sail!

Woke up at 4.00 am to see the sky was quite light, and lay in bed thinking "shall I or shan't I?" This went on for fifteen minutes and finally thought, I am awake, the sky is clear, I am on the Cornish coast and it's the solstice, if I don't do it now I never will. On the short drive to the headland the pre-dawn sky was a glorious pink and I cursed myself for dithering, it had almost gone in the few minutes it took to get to my spot and set up. The sun was still below the horizon, it was cold and the wind was blowing hard so I set up the tripod behind a natural wind break on the cliff top, starting with the DFA 24-70mm and then changed to the DFA 70-200mm. Here is what unfolded.

Best Fathers’ Day ever here in Cornwall, treated to lunch by wife and son at a farm shop where they serve their own cattle as beef. Huge delicious portions and wine, followed by a refreshing walk along the beach collecting shells then back for tea and cake.

McGregNi, I use a Marumi 5+ achromatic macro “filter” on the DFA 28-105mm for excellent results close up. It is handy to keep in the bag and just pop on when opportunities present themselves without the weight and expense of a separate macro lens.
