The L-bracket has advantages: it keeps the weight perpendicular over the head so is better balanced - try nudging your setup when rotated to vertical on a ball head and see how easy it could tip, and more liable to shake. Also if you have set up in landscape mode then with an L-bracket you can turn to portrait with little readjustment. I also use a 3-way head which is better for panoramas but it is limited in vertical, and it has a much greater offset so is easy to unbalance. Obviously only worth getting if you use a tripod fairly often though.

The L-bracket does add a little bit of bulk to the body so your bag needs to accommodate that. I imagine a grip plus larger L-bracket could become a bit of a handful, ok for studio stuff but would you want to carry that around much?

For a K1 without a grip I have a Kirk Enterprises Solutions (KES) tailored to the specific body so you get full access to the ports and is snug and unobtrusive enough to be left on. I don’t think they do one for a grip added though.

PS they probably do one for the D810 as well, but the one in my previous reply may well fit both.

We're not terribly well catered for it seems when you go hunting for L-brackets (getting one for D810 is a chore as well)....

Seem to be a generic 3-legged thing for K-1 minus grip which some people say works, but you have limited access to the slots, grip battery...etc. RRS have one for K-1 but as their site provides only one image it's difficult to say whether it's a generic item again or not...

Does anyone else have an elegant solution for K-1 plus grip?

(apart from moving grip )
This came up in a search: ProMediaGear PLX4x L-Bracket which fits a K1 with a grip. Try ww.topteks.com for UK stockist.

I think we had the same issue last year but they ended up with a better positioned site than previously. Then the DFA 50mm f1.4 was being launched but other than the GRiii I wonder what else there will be?

Ah but will you be able to find where you left it with an app? Assuming of course you remember where you left your phone. I have only ever lost my car once, in my dissolute youth and having to explain to my Dad and police why I spent the night in a strange part of Leicester, only to find it the following day in the next street!

What white balance do you use? I find that the multi setting works best with different light sources (when I remember!).

Another rant.....we went to look at new cars yesterday and were dismayed at the latest offerings. Until now you could get into any car and pretty much drive it right away with only minor variations in the controls, but not any more. The numpties designing them assume you only ever drive just the one car all the time, so with iPad-like dashboards and controls every one is totally and radically different to operate. On Mercedes for instance every single thing, including to start the bloody car, is controlled by little buttons and microscopic touch pads on the steering wheel. Inadvertently touch the wrong thing and your speedo will vanish and another dial replaces it, just the thing to sort out at 70 on the M6. And all your lights and indicators are on one stalk whilst the other works the auto gearbox. On Audi and Volvo everything apparently is touch screen in a completely different configuration.

So, if for any reason someone else needs to drive your car, like when you are sharing on a long journey, they will need an induction course first. And if something goes wrong or you need to check something you won’t have a handbook, it will be...well you guessed it, and too bad if there is no wifi.

Imagine if every computer manufacturer decided to only use their own software instead of the two standard ones, and you get the idea.

I think there will be a lot of interest in the 70-700mm f4, I hope it will be another *lens.
That will be an IMPRESSIVE lens - just hope it is painted silver like the old FA* lenses....and BIG BOLD PENTAX in black on the lens hood
Oops! Very droll. Looking at the roadmap again it seems the 70-200mm f4 will just be a green one, however that puts it in a lower price bracket but should still be be pretty good. I wonder if the new SDM from the 50mm f1.4 will become universal?
