have you tried the help option and try searching default saved file type or something along those lines

think i have the answer, the iff file selection is just above the jpeg selection on the dropdown list when you select save as, i think you probably selected it by accident.i believe if you save a file as whatever in your case "iff" that is the selection that comes up every time until you select a different one, so if you open a file in ps, does not matter what it is, select save as and make sure you select jpeg and save it, i believe it will now save as jpeg each time you use it until something else is selected, been there done that.
also windows will not view tiff files that is why you had a square full of random colours it happened with me when i tried it, windows viewer in 7 at least.

if you select a raw file right click and choose "open with" then select your version of adobe that should be in the list, the first page the file opens in is adobe camera raw ,it will be the relevant one to your software, you should not need to update. this assumes your raw files are DNG,again you can check this by right click on the file go to the bottom of the list and select properties, then select details and scroll slowly down through that and you will find the file type under the file heading. i imagine they are as you have been converting with adobe already. i had a similar problem with an unknown file type appearing along side the jpeg when i did work on photo,s sent to me but i just deleted them and suffered no untoward consequences.

i used to use a Lowepro rezo 170 shoulder bag , that was not expensive and held K7/K5 with 16-45 med zoom attached and had room for 2 other lenses ,55-300 and 105 macro usually, plus pocket for odds and ends, also a waterproof cover.untill i bought my 2nd think tank i was still using it ,just my travelling light kit got bigger.

you need the pentax remote control F ,which is IR ,you also will probably need to be able to trigger from behind the camera not sure if the Kx has that facility as the K7 & K5 have, if not then you need the third party one as per JohnX ,s link. the Pentax one you can set up to trigger how you want in the menu i believe
