Re "public spaces": It's the grey areas I'm worried about. How about the roads and pavements immediately around Canary Wharf, for example?
I think the question is are these roads public or private?, Canary Wharf estate is private property, they may welcome visitors to enter it, maybe take a pictures, but probably reserve themselves right to question photographers and set-up other rules. If the roads mentioned are not private (not part of the estate), the only problem should be the increased police attention, but they still should adhere to the rules for photographing from public areas, isn't it?. I guess if these roads were private there should be a signs telling that photography is not permitted (if they wouldn't like it) right?
Other thing is that police could always use other "powers", anti-terror stuff and effectively stop you from taking pictures if they didn't like you (as iceblinker wrote above) .

From other side, if DSLRs would come with some 64MB build in memory I can imagine myself a people buying first DSLR (just because seller said "it produces excellent pictures and better than the compact one they have") and then moan "What, I can save only 3 pictures?, even my cheap, digital camera is better, I can save at least 20 photos before I have to delete them, and what files they are, I can't even see that RAW something on my PC" .
So I guess it is better not to add another chapter in the manual "How to save more than 3 pictures when using your camera".

AS far I'm aware Pentax SDM is a micromotor, with some gear to drive the focussing system. HSM is a ring motor. Some people believe HSM is faster (I guess as it may have lower inertia "on the back" (?)), and being more reliable due to less mechanics inside (?), both are silent anyway , I wouldn't care what letters "sit inside" as long as it works, is fast and silent, why not .

So is the 60-250mm worth 4 times the price for weather sealing and HSM .. personally from the look of those I would say not.
Problem with 55-300 is that it is loosing sharpness towards the edges quite significantly, of course using f/8.0 - f/11.0 helps (but doesn't nivelate) on the cost of slower shutter. 60-250 is much more consistent (not a surprise anyway for this price).
SDM not HSM, Pentax still doesn't do HSM.

Small, bit compressed example pic taken with 60-250:

Repeated focus chart test few times and conclusion is, with 60-250 if first defocused lens towards the infinity, it has the tendency to back focussing, if defocussed first towards the min focussing distance, then it shows front focus. It still could be the K10D (or firmware 1.3) way of dealing with SDM, tried same test with 55-300 and it doesn't show that issue.
