Memory cards

Hi all i seem to be having a bit of bother with 2 extreme III 4gb sdhc cards also i've got a couple of san disk extreme III non sdhc cards which have been fine since day one.

When i take some photos on certain day then get home and upload the images to my pc using Adobe Bridge there are one or two remnants of photos i've taken weeks earlier instead of the images i've just taken.

I originally thought it was my k10 but since buying a k20 and using a different card its happening again.I bought the cards from play.com on the same day so there is a chance of them being the same batch.

I've been in touch with sandisk who have opened up a case file for me.

I am now thinking of of binning san disk altogether and using Lexar maybe.

Can anyone recommend a card with decent read and write speeds

Martin - try Kingston Class 6 SDHC from 7dayshop. I've not had any problems with them.

See what I wrote in previous threads about Sandisk. Wouldn't touch em with a barge pole

Lexar 133x Pro are excellent. So are Toshiba's and I'm using a Fuji 133x 4GB at present without any problems. Better to stick to Class 6 cards to make sure that the camera can write to them at around 10-11 MB/sec in the case of the K10D (not sure what max. speed the K20D writes at).

There are lots of fake cards around. I've never had any trouble with any card, Lexar CF's or Sandisk SD/SDHC of various types, mostly Extreme III's.

If yours are genuine Sandisk cards, I'm sure they'll replace them FOC as i believe they have a lifetime warranty, but I'm not certain.

Have had zero probs with genuine Sandisk Extreme III 4Gb SDHC cards (Bought from Picstop.co.uk)
(the ones that include the "MicroMate" high speed USB card reader)

I've just downloaded a fairly meaningless (but free) benchmark program and tested the Fuji card I'm using at present under W98SE. It at least confirms that I could read at 19MB/s (126.4x)in theory, but in practice PEF's and JPG's copy over to a 200MB ramdisk at 12.6MB/s (84x) which is the same speed as my other cards.

Interesting that on one of the posts on the Sandisk site. Nikon list that card as not being compatible with a D70, but a Jessops own brand is OK.

I also have a D70 and had the same problem as yourself. That particular card is not compatible with the D70. The compatible cards are listed on the manual pg 192. even upgrading the firmware didn't help. i had to buy a 4gb own brand card from jessops or i would have been stuck with 1 of the lower capacity cards listed on the compatibility chart in the d70 manual.

Most things in life have pros and cons and one advantage in a designed product will usually have a downside, although sometimes only cost is the negative aspect.

When we have very fast cards, apart from cost is there any disadvantage? For example, is the service life shorter or is the error rate higher?

I have no problems with Extreme III 4GB cards and the MicroMate reader that came with them. I have had trouble with other readers though.

Same here I bought 10 of the b*****s before I thought I was off to India from pictsop and as Matt says with micromate no probs at all, where did you buy them from?

Same for me, some number of these, no problems.

Almost all of my cards SD, SDHC and CF are SanDisk and I have never had a problem with any of them.

A colleague started having problems with some SanDisk SDs in his camera and was blaming SanDisk - when I pointed out that all three had the same serial number he realised that they were fakes.

Unfortunately SanDisk is getting a "bad name" because of the counterfeit cards - but what can they do about it?
