Indeed, it needs to be in AV mode.
Not quite, M & B modes also work.

Actually there was but you had to be quick to catch it!
The comment was something like 'meter for the highlights'

But used carefully and with the right subject matter (which basically means "not moving"
I've got some good results with my 500 mirror at a motor racing event. Moving is fine as long as its predictable, Focus carefully in advance & wait for the action to reach that spot. (The green hexagon helps confirm focus even in MF)

Certainly I found when someone came off into the gravel, they rapidly moved out of focus - I've got a rapid sequence of a sidecar spinning off into the dirt, which is somewhat let down by getting progressively softer

DOF can't have been more than about a handful of meters, judging by some of the pictures of the pack coming round the bend...

It also makes my K-m and flash look rather professional, even if it does take up a fair bit of space when deployed!
The paper tissue I draped over the in built flask on my K100D this evening seemed to work better than I expected. It didn't look professional at all, but I don't think the moth I was photographing noticed.

So yes, it still applies... you get what you pay for.
Actually this is not necessarily the case at all!

There are loads of scammers taking your money without sending you what you paid for (or even anything)
In other cases budget supplies can be from exactly the same OEM source. For example, laboratory supplies often have significant markup - even when the goods are standard (I can remember being quoted over £200 for a 8MB PC card memory for a lab instrument when a top manufactures 32MB one was listed at £16)

It is however, generally true that you don't get more than you pay for.

Ady - I hope your kit proves up to your requirements!

Oh dear, the rubbish weather I guess
The Vulcan was also due to make an appearance at Silverstone on Saturday (an extra during the touring car meet) but didn't make it.

Over the weekend, We did get an aerobatic show, a P51 mustang, the Lancaster, the red devils & half a red arrow display (apparently curtailed by gliders straying into their airspace!) all with great weather.

Typically I'd left my camera at home!

Wide angle does eventually become fisheye, although I'm not sure at what point.
Actually this is wrong.
Wide angles are rectilinear. Fisheyes use different designs (4 basic types - orthogonal, equidistant and two others I cant remember) which give much greater field of view.
From the online field of view calculators I've played with even with an impossibly short focal length of 0.1mm you don't get close to 180° FOV with rectilinear.
Pentax's 10-17 fisheye manages 180 on the diagonal, & Sigma do one thats 180 all round.
