More advanced flashgun open up new possibilities, such as P-TTL exposure control, increased power, bounce, swivel, auto zoom, rear curtain use (used for showing a blur of movement behind a sharp image), high speed flash, modelling light...
These start about £70 For the cheapest Metz P-TTL and go to ~£220 for the top of the line Pentax (there are probably much more expensive options available too)
Unless your budget is really tight its worth considering if any of these might interest you.
If you go for an older 2nd hand model check the trigger voltage BEFORE using it - some can damage your camera! Fully manual flash guns can be very cheap, but they're also very limited.

I've just been lucky enough to get a reasonable example of one ot these for £3. (No one else bid - for a change)
It arrived yesterday & I didn't get in till late so my experience with it is very limited, but my initial tests suggest it's better than I expected. In macro mode it gives 1:1 (plus crop factor) with a 50mm lens set on infinity. (Changing the focus on the lens gives still more magnification)
If the optical quality lives up to promice I might stop looking for that elusive helicoid!

Indications are, if you're interested in macro, its well worth Pete's asking price.

Thanks, all.

Rather more than I expected.... I'm sad to say.
And your original post specifically excluded all the earlier primes - which of course still work fine with digital...
If you want to collect them all there's over 30 F & FA primes (Auto focus/auto aperture) another 29 A series (Manual focus / auto aperture) & over 50 M & K series (fully manual) and that just the multicoated K mount primes. We certainly don't lack for choice!

I think you've missed a couple.
DAL 35 F2.4 - the DA35 macro is f2.8
DFA50

Not that I've got any of them

No 5 for me too. (Isn't it a crop of no 6 though?).

I've never been to a ralley, though I'm often at track events. Is it possible to pan with the car through the hairpin? - I'm not sure if it would work... (and panning takes some practice even without the double-back).

You've got the gravel flying nicely to indicate the speed, though a location with a water splash or jump would have made it easier to show the speed if the crowds let you get there.

what's my cheapest option to get reasonable 'close to macro' shots?
using a K-X?
Basic PK Extension tubes are available from the far east for ~£5 (E-bay) - I got a set just to use as lens mounts - in addition reversing/coupling rings are a similar cost (all perhaps somewhat limited if you've not got a lens with an aperture ring)

All three approaches can give you true macro with a bit of care, and none require any lenses so don't spoil the image.

Quite a few on eBay. I just searched on "Pentax T2" and got over 50 hits. Not all just adapters of course, but plenty there none the less.
These are all standard adapters for fitting T2 lens to pentax bodies - not pentax lenses to T2 accessories. I've got at least 4 of the standard ones on various lenses/telescopes.

For playing around with macro work I'd like to get an adapter to mount a pentax lens on a T2 screw thread (male or female). Does anyone know of such a fitting? (Google just shows standard T2 mounts).

This could give me the helicoid I've been after...

I have a use for a 52mm filter ring (no glass) but I'd rather not smash the glass on something that's useful to someone else!

In the unlikely event no-one else want's it, I'll have it rather than have it binned.
