They are 'dirt cheap' on ebay !

I got one recently for 99p delivered from UK !
However, when I just checked they now want £2.99 for UK supplier !

You CAN still get them from Hong Kong for 99p delivered and they are OK, I've bought 2x 49mm and 1x 52mm caps at different times and from different suppliers.

PS Elements is good for learning as it has a 'Guide' mode - this opens windows that combine key adjustment controls with explanations of what to do as you go. Once you've got more confident then you simply switch to 'Full Edit' mode and use the controls without the handholding.

Like full photoshop, without this guide mode, then the various adjustment panels are a bit hidden under menu items, so it can be confusing to begin with. Elements has been devised specifically for photographers without all the art & design features of full Photoshop.

If you open RAW files then initially the Adobe Camera Raw window will open firstly to allow you to make basic adjustments and then the image is opened into the main Elements window for more detailed work.

A key reason for using Elements would be to learn about Layers, which provide a very flexible way of adjusting smaller parts of photos in detail, or of combining shots in various ways. All good stuff, and very useful as your skills develop!
Just check the Adobe website for more help and user guides and to take it a bit further have a look at this site where you can download some free trial copies of Photoshop Elements Techniques.

Since PSE is such a widely used program there are reams of help around - you simply need to LOOK !

I have a Hoya 28mm f/2.8 with K mount off ebay. However, the K mount is VERY tight. Initially I thought it would not fit onto my K-r but after trying it on an old Chinon camera I found that it is just very tight.

I have compared it with my other Pentax K mount lenses and also with some M42 to K mount adaptors and cannot see any obvious difference.
I also checked the dimensions as best I could using digital calipers, but again I can't find any significant difference from my other lenses ?

Has anyone else had a similar problem with this or ANY other lens ?
If so, I would be very grateful to hear if you fixed it ?

I have not yet tried 'blueing' it out but perhaps that is the next step ?

HELP !

There may be a very simple and cheap solution ?

Depending upon how much the 'bulge' is, it may be possible to screw in an 'up-size' filter adaptor to move the filter holder further away from the 'bulge' ?

i.e. if the filter ring is 52mm dia you could screw in a 52 to 58mm or 62mm adaptor, or pro-rata.

These adaptors are very cheap off e-bay suppliers.

Just a thought ?

just mooching around to see what I can get hold of to play with really.

These 2 seem to be very reasonably priced. is that because theyre common? or because theyre no good?

namely the F 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 and the F SMC 35-80mm f4.5-5.6.

both £25-£40. seems a steal really.

how do they compare to the DA 18-55mm kit lens from my k100d super?
My initial reaction is "Don't get these !"

Have a look at my thread "Lens weight and camera shake ?" where there was much discussion on the relative merits of the DAL 18-55 and other lenses in the 28-80 range.

I have a Sigma epsilon AF 28-70 f3.5-4.5 which I'm very pleased with.
However, the general advice was to go for the SMC F 35-70 and avoid the 35-80 and 28-80 in F or FA variants.

I now have an F 35-70 which I got for less than the sums you quoted and the Sigma only cost me £15 ! Keep looking !

Best of luck

I've got an annoying gap in my focal lengths between 50 and 70, this will fill that perfectly.
What you neeed, then, is an F 35-70, and you WON'T need a mortgage to get one ! This old lens has had many good reports here and elswhere, so good hunting !

In the gallery, you say your new lens is a 35-80mm.

Hopefully, it is the SMC F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 NOT the 35-80mm which is reputedly not that great a lens.

Andrew
YES ! You are correct, Andrew.

I have corrected the Gallery info - thanks for pointing it out.

I was keen to get the photo uploaded and the fingers were faster than the brain ! A very common occurrence these days !!!

As you said, the FA 35-80 does NOT get such good reviews which is why I passed over several that came up on ebay last week.
However, I was lucky to get THE lens at a very good price.

I thought it was just me until I bought a cheap Pentax F 35-70 mm which is as sharp as a tack.
I have a Pentax F 35-70mm lens too and it also is as sharp as a tack. It is, though, no sharper than my 18-55mm kit lens at 35mm, f/5.6. If your kit lens is much worse, then you might indeed have a duff one.

Andrew
Thanks for the tip, Andrew and Charlotte.

I have now joined the 'F 35-70 Club' !

It arrived this morning and I did some test shots at 35, 50 and 70mm after lunch. The light was not too good and (being lazy !) I left the K-r on P and auto-focus. Under these conditions the K-r chose fully open aperture all the time. However, even with the lens wide open I am pleased with the first looks. (My 2nd shot is posted on the Gallery today)

Thanks for the tip, guys !

Following the various comments on this thread about other users good results from the DA(L) 18-55 lens I've gone back over my old shots taken with my copy of this lens.

I discovered some shots taken around mid-zoom range (i.e. 30 - 35mm) and have posted one taken at 32.5mm on the Gallery.

Earlier postings on this thread have emphasised the importance of stopping down to f/8 or smaller but the image of the donkeys taken at 32.5mm and f/5 is as sharp as I could expect even with the aperture fairly open ?

I've not been able to find any reviews of this lens comparing performance at 'wide', 'mid' and 'tele' end of the zoom range so wondered if anyone has any info ?

My 'poor' results were mainly when using it at the 55mm end !

Perhaps I should 'lock' it on 35mm and use it as a 'prime' !!!
