Two choices really

AF540 as been said, as has the tilt and angle you want.

Or, if you want to get into portrait photography I suggest the following:-
Interfit EXD200 kit with dual heads and comes with brolly and softbox.
Add the IRX infrared transmitter and you have wireless too.

Both cost about the same amount.

Mind you I do have both the AF540 flash and the interfits.

There is another option, especially if you shoot portraits outside, is to get a large reflector - you may be surprised at how good it will be.

Hope this helps.

I agree that the card door and indeed the way the card is held in the camera is better on the K20D over the K-5. Even getting the card out of the camera on the K-5 can be fiddly.

On the other points, the K-5 is better, I can get so much more out of the RAW files of the K-5 over the K20D.

The K-5 is a wonderful beast.

Okay all, what would you consider the K1000 of the digital age?
When I say the K1000, I mean the DSLR that gives the basics for learning photography. A camera that does not have all the bells an whistles we now get. A camera that you can learn with..

My suggestion is the *istDS (and its sisters, the *istDS2 and Samsung GX1S - not the others I might add)
Why?

Pentaprism viewfinder. - (remember all the other 6MP Pentax's had pentamirrors)
No shake reduction - Lazy really, and make you think
AA batteries - just go to the shop and buy more
Good low ISO performance
Simple controls
SD/SDHC cards (everyone has at least one)
No silly "creative" effects. Only the ones that as a student you need.
no P-TTL, just TTL.
Great with manual lenses (for me, better than K10D K20D and to an extent the K-5)
Shame they don't still make it.

Look on Fleabay. I got my 170-500 dead cheap. Not the sort of lens you can just put on and shoot, but you need to work with it. Yet when you work with it, it nails the shot! Noisy though when it focuses, but when it was less than half the price of a new one, it is worth it.

You could shoot wedding photos on an *istDS with kit lens if you had to and provided you had two of them.

Spooky, were you at the wedding I shot many years ago with this exact kit?
The Bride and Groom were very happy as it happens.
Still, I hate doing weddings.........

K-r or K-x. Both cracking entry level cameras.
Also, look for a used *istDS, only 6MP, no shake reduction, but a great viewfinder, simple to use and produces excellent images. It could be the one to get you started on the digital world.

Well this autofocus improvement must be very good else the K5 looks like a bargain to me.
Quite agree .. the K-5 must be in the last few months of it's life I would guess.
Agreed, if the initial price if the K30 is more than the K-5, I would get the K-5.

If the K30 was around £450, I would be interested. So wait a few months.

I'm not saying you can't do a wedding with a K-5, of course you can .. and very well but you need a professional company behind you that is ready to loan you a camera at the drop of a hat should yours go wrong the day before (as an example).

Same goes with any professional shoot, not just weddings.

Until Pentax have the same system (and range of equipment) in place as Canon and Nikon they unfortunately stand no chance of getting into the "real" professional markets in any great numbers.
Fair point, but I think Pentax are on the road for what you are talking about (CPS is the one)
The K-5 is certainly in the same league as CaNikon for being a rugged reliable camera (certainly more so than my K20D when I doing events)
Some lenses are already up there as equipment that will work whatever (the Limiteds) It is just that the backup needs to be there and Certainly the reliability of some (not all) DA* lenses need to be brought up to scratch. Certainly the 16-50 has had issues with focusing, and the early 50-135 are reluctant to focus initially (I know I have to coerce mine into life after lack of use - I get round it) But when they perform, they perform exceptionally.
I know they have some good support for the 645D, they just need to cascade it down to at least the K-5. So probably like CPS.
That and a FF camera, but that would be opening another can of worms......

Mind you, I must admit, that until recently a lot of Wedding togs (certainly in Manchester) were using Fuji S3 and S5 Pro bodies, which of course are APS-C. Yet these bodies were renowned for their dynamic range (err I have heard of this somewhere, oh yes, the K-5!)
So, get the right lens combo for weddings, and APS-C can be a boon for Wedding togs. As for studio, actually my K-5 is a great body, and produces great results. It is only occasionally at certain focal lengths that you wish for shallower DOF when shooting at the magic studio setup (1/125sec at F8, ISO100)
Still, thinking about it, a 645D with those same settings would be even better............LOL

Ignoring weddings, there is a very cheap way of studio shots. Get some Interfits, use M42 Taks and adapter, and you will get excellent shots for a fraction of the price. AF does not really matter in the studio.
