Another bump... now £229 including Special Delivery in the UK.
This lens is brand new, it's only come out of the box for the pics at the beginning of the thread.
Please, someone buy it quick - I'm starting to feel tempted to keep it

Not had any locking so far Nipper, and have used a variety of lenses. I don't own any SDM lenses though so I can't make any comment on whether or not this could be a cause.

David

My k5 locked up today pressed the shutter and it locked up till i took the battery out and re inserted . this his my third edition hope its not trouble ahead anybody else had this will it get worse : only took 600 shots with it , getting so i dare not touch it it seems to have got noisier has well :
Each time it was under the same condition. I was too close to the subject, therefore outside of the lens focusing range, which made it hunt, and the camera locked. Maybe it should not do this ?.
But as I have identified the problem, if the lens/camera starts hunting for focus, I just move back, to be within the lens close focusing range, and have not had it lock since.
Now I know under which condition it occurs, I can live with it, if however it continued to happen or started to lock under other conditions, then it would be a warranty claim.
As John has said, the best thing is to use it, because if there is a fault that is the only way its going to show.
Take care.

Mine locked up once on AFC whilst tracking birds. Hasn't happened since but I tend not to use AFC very often.
After lock up my Sigma 100-300 played up but has since been fixed by Sigma.
Which lens were you using ?
Sigma told me my K5 AF drive shaft is shorter than the K10, K7 etc which could impact screw drive lenses (AF slipping). I'll be discussing this with SRS as the AF drive shaft does ot seem as 'sturdy' when compared to my K7.
