oh no not again
There's no point having something and being afraid to use it in case it breaks. It might not break.
After lock up my Sigma 100-300 played up but has since been fixed by Sigma.
Which lens were you using ?
Sigma told me my K5 AF drive shaft is shorter than the K10, K7 etc which could impact screw drive lenses (AF slipping). I'll be discussing this with SRS as the AF drive shaft does ot seem as 'sturdy' when compared to my K7.

Mine locked up once on AFC whilst tracking birds. Hasn't happened since but I tend not to use AFC very often.

i had pentax da300 on , so it was sdm when it locked
My k5 locked up today pressed the shutter and it locked up till i took the battery out and re inserted . this his my third edition hope its not trouble ahead anybody else had this will it get worse : only took 600 shots with it , getting so i dare not touch it it seems to have got noisier has well :
My K5, has locked, I think three times, each time it was with the Pentax 100mm macro lens fitted.
Each time it was under the same condition. I was too close to the subject, therefore outside of the lens focusing range, which made it hunt, and the camera locked. Maybe it should not do this ?.
But as I have identified the problem, if the lens/camera starts hunting for focus, I just move back, to be within the lens close focusing range, and have not had it lock since.
Now I know under which condition it occurs, I can live with it, if however it continued to happen or started to lock under other conditions, then it would be a warranty claim.
As John has said, the best thing is to use it, because if there is a fault that is the only way its going to show.
Take care.

Funny you should say that Chris i was very close to a robin when it happened i must have been close to minimum focusing range so could have been that, and yep i think your both right i must use it more often to see if it self destructs , oh and i was in AFS cheers

Not had any locking so far Nipper, and have used a variety of lenses. I don't own any SDM lenses though so I can't make any comment on whether or not this could be a cause.

yep i think its a bit hit and miss whether you get a good one or a slightly not so good one David well it does for me this will be my fourth if this one goes t-ts up, hope yours his a good un its just the process of sending it back and forth does me head in

If it only locks with one lens, could it not be a problem with the lens?

I too had that with my 100mm macro earlier today when I was taking some more ladybird pictures (link.)
For once I had put the camera in liveview to focus, it couldn't find focus (went straight through it) and locked up when fully extended.
Had to remove the battery to clear it and then it was OK. (Didn't bother with liveview again!) No problems when it wasn't liveview.
If it only locks with one lens, could it not be a problem with the lens?

Seems like an issue the the 100mm macros then.

George, many thanks.
I don’t think it’s a problem with the lens, as all functions work.
As I said in my post it only occurred when I was to close to the subject, and the lens/camera started hunting for focus.
Which I put down to user error.
I used the same lens on my K10 and deliberately, went in to close for the lens to focus, as I would expect it just hunted and failed to focus, then pulled focus as I move back from the subject.
At this time its not a problem for me as I have identified, exactly the conditions at which the K5 locked, it was just a heads up for Philip, to try and pinpoint his problem.
The one thing I do notice, this lens pulls/locks focus, quicker on the K10, than it does with the K5, again not a problem, just an observation.
Take care.
