impressive spider pic - scary one. Looks big and ugly.
Your normal set-up flash rig seems to work far better than this. Perhaps it is my screen (here at work) but there seems to be some harsh reflections from the flash. Not something I usual spot with the rig....

I think the first of the last 3 looks better. Better range and contrast.
Always hard to rescue blown highlights. The problem in this case is that the eye is drawn to the blown out parts.
Looking at the picture I wonder 1) what is he looking at 2) his neck.
Not sure what you want to tell with the picture - if it is him playing - I would have loved to see him looking down or at some notes.
Hope you get what I'm trying to tell.

Not sure this is the right answer - but something I use a lot. Do you know it is possible to adjust the output of the flash (pop-up) by hitting the fn button? Hitting the fn button and enter the flash menu you can adjust the output by the wheels. Not sure if that is what you are looking for. If you use a slave - you would be able to adjust the slave manual as well.Hmm, I didn't know about Slave modes 1 and 2 on my flashgun. Neat! That will be useful.
