Like most things, there has to be a compromise. I have just bought the Sigma 70mm macro, this is one of the first shots I have taken so I am still learning how to get the best out of it.

Taken at F2.8 to see how shallow the depth of field is (very shallow as you can see)

I chose this focal length because:
a) I don't have to be over close at 1:1
b) Excellent reviews about it's sharpness and nice smooth out of focus parts
c) Cost, I got mine for £219

The Sigma 105mm was also considered (at the same cost).

That is fantastic, but where is Gandalf, shouldn't he be looking out of the window. I love it.

With 1 I think your right. Lose the second lama and doorway and I think it would improve things.

A good idea for those of us in the UK but don't forget this a global thing!

It depends what you want to use the lens for. Wait if you have no urgent requirements. Often you can take the shots you want without spending money on a lens you think you need. Time is on your side, don't rush.

John,
Olympus haven't entireley abandoned their OM series as an adapter can be bought from Olympus allowing you to use your old lenses. Adapters to convert Pentax to 4:3 are also available, so Olympus have been quite canny by opening up the system to people with older lenses.

Disgusted that again a big company won't support their products.
P&S is the biggest part of any manufactures market and should never be ignored.
Most people just want to buy a "good" camera that will record the moment simply with no real effort, and expect it to do so for a good long time into the future.
When you make a DSLR you are potentially only selling a body, not everybody is going to buy your lenses, 'cos not everybody is wealthy enough to, so they look to 2nd party manufactures to get the best value for money.
If Pentax turn their backs on these people then there will be no future for them in the "more up market" DSLR area 'cos there will be no sales to support R&D.
Japanese companies with "cache" have a reputation for abandoning their customers at will as I have experienced: Seiko, Sony, Pentax, Kawasaki, Honda.
The only Jap company that I have found with a commitment above the expected is Nissan.
Having said all this I have more respect for Japanese companies than any other, but they turn their backs on certain markets too easily.

It's a difficult problem. If possible try to move slightly to place the sun behind a tree trunk or similar. You can underexpose quite a lot and recover much of the information in the dark shadows after. On this one I could make more detail in the black foreground visible but I liked the affect as it is. Nothing I could move the sun behind, but I exposed for the sky and set -1 ev during processing. You will nearly always get some part blown out, but that's life.
