In our Pentax world I doubt the screw drive is going to disappear anytime soon. If the kit 18-55 / 50-200 appear in SDM only form, then perhaps the writing might be on the wall. Until that day though I doubt it.

IIRC the 28-70mm can suffer from separation of the rear elements, which is pretty much terminal. If you decide to go for one then make sure you get a guarantee or can check it carefully before buying.

That's quite a saga. It appears from your description that it is AF that is in issue here, not focus per se were one to do that manually?
Also (knowing you had a K10 and K20), did you discover shims in those bodies as well?
