I wondered that. And what's with the 'Front' and arrow? Like you wouldn't know?

The speculation go from some kind of shift/tilt lens to a filter insert

Maybe it's a reversible bayonet like the lenses on the Rollei SL66? Effectively making *every* lens a macro lens without the need for additional accessories?
Pure speculation on my part, and if it was the case I'd have expected Pentax to have shouted about it so probably wrong...
Don't think it's tilt/shift though - not bulky enough to allow for the movements required.

That might Explain the Front sign Hefty but not the dials right?
Btw the hood is also very strange see how long it is and how short the "petals" are?
It looks like a wide angle lens hood but with a long shaft

I'm sure all will be revealed soon, at which time we'll all say a collective, "Aaaahhhh.... So *that's* what it's for! Seems so obvious now we know..." (or something along those lines). 
I'm liking what I see so far about this camera but I still haven't seen any photos taken with a production model anywhere - to me that will be the real test.

lets hope it's something goos, it's great to see Pentax leaving us guessing what kind of lens it is.
I'm watching the Chinese forum at the moment some are quite professional so they might buy one.
That's where the lens came from btw.

I'm wondering if the bit with "Front" on is removable? Possibly it's for a filter with the little dial being used to rotate things like polarisers and the thumbscrew used to secure the filter holder, like the grip on the old SFX?

Looks like a filter insert to me as well (hence the "Front" designation).

On Pentax Japan News about this lens it says under 'other features' "PL filter window for easy installation of a polarizing filter without removing the lens hood "
So its almost certainly for a drop in filter as a filter window in the hood like in many DA/DA* lenses still requires removal of the hood to fit/remove the filter

Bob this isn't the 55mm
And this is not something in the hood like the DA/DA* but this in the lens
But yeah it could be an filter insert, like with the FA*600 for example, that one had a filter insert on the back.
If they could make all the filters the same size this way

A number of bigger longer lenses have rear-drop in filter slots, and some lenses like my K series 15mm have the filters built in, so that is certainly a possibility.

To me it does look like something attached to a pre-production version of the announced 55mm lens (screwed into what would normally be the filter ring?)
As to what it is and what it does, I'm sure we will find out, but I like the sound of a weather sealed circular polariser, if only cos I just made it up!

Danny you don't have all the info but you could use the 645D with the 55mm lens so why mask the focal length on this model?
I think it's most likely a wide angle lens by the shape of it 35mm maybe?

on the basis of the depth of field markings I'd say it's a 35.
It's certainly not the 55, as it's hyperfocal distance at f/16 should be about 4.9m, which isn't even marked on that distance scale.
