Hi all,

Due to recently purchasing a Metz Af58-1 flashgun, I am now selling my 2 previous flashes. All the items listed below are in very good condition and full working order. All prices are in Euro.

*** Photos to follow soon ***

1. Pentax AF360 FGZ (€95.00)

This model will be very familiar to Pentax DSLR owners, so I’ll say no more. Used on both my K10D and K-X. Price includes the following:

• AF360FGZ flashgun
• Original Pentax pouch
• Bounce diffuser
• Instruction manual
• Original packaging

2. Jessops 300AFD (€20.00)

Cheap and cheerful Pentax mount flash from the good people at Jessops. I used this many times on my K10D to good effect.

Some further details available on the following link:

Price includes the following:

• 300AFD flashgun

I find 1/60 fast enough and i think it gives just the right amount of blur when they are moving.
But we all shoot differently.
Sometimes I'd like to use a speed faster than 1/60, especially when something dramatic is happening (e.g. guitarist leaping in the air).

And sometimes a slower speed mixed with some trailing shutter works a treat for something more unusual. Like this - link

I find however that one or two stops of faster shutter speed is all that's needed. Unless the band are performing on horseback or something.

Never had to deal with horses at a gig. Lots of stage-diving by the crowd and even the band. But never on horseback. You never know though - someday...

Are you allowed to use flash then?
I also have shot some concerts and never was allowed to use it but also never needed it.
Hi Stefan,

Generally I'm shooting in very poor light (often backlit). Using flash is never a problem. There's usually a few of us photographers at shows and the bands never mind. It's taken for granted.

George.

I hope you enjoy the new flash. By all means check out the features, especially these two:

The secondary "reflector" (actually it's a flash) allows you to beam forward some fill light while using the main flash as a bounce. Can work wonders on portraits.

The HSS mode gives you the ability to pick a faster shutter speed than the sync rate, at the cost of a stop or two of maximum light. Nice for action.
Thanks rparmar,

I think that both of those features will be very useful when taking shots of the bands. The secondary flash will hopefully bring out some extra detail in the shots. And certainly any increase in shutter speed is welcome - you should see how fast some of these guys move on stage!!

George.

Why not use 2 flashes?
Hi Stefan,

I couldn't justify having the 2 flashes. I know I wouldn't make use of them. I mostly shoot bands live in concert so single flash is all I need for that.

Plus - I need the cash from the sale of the AF360 to cover some of the cost of the new Metz!

George.

Thanks to everyone for the useful comments.

I decided to take the plunge and bought myself a Metz 58 AF-1. Picked it up 2nd hand on eBay for a decent price.

So I guess I'll be selling the AF360FGZ in the Classifieds now! Have to replenish the bank account somewhat.

Regards,

George.

@George:
The effective GN also depends on the ISO setting I presume your quoted values are for ISO100.

The higher the ISO, the further the effective flash distance.

So, if you have a GN of 54, with an aperture of f/5.6 at ISO 100 that's 9.6m
But, at ISO200 you can calculate the same as ISO100 at f/4 = 13.5m
Going to ISO400, calculate as ISO100 at f/2.8 = 19.3m

Probably best for the OP to specify the conditions and then we can give more of an idea...

Matt
Thanks for the clarification Matt,

Yes I should have noted that the GN's related to an ISO of 100. I've no experience of using flash at distances greater than 5 or 6 metres myself. It's hard to comment on the OP's chances of success without further detail on the distances he has to contend with.

Cheers,

George.

Hi Alex,

How far are you from your subjects? This will determine how effective any flash unit will be.

The AF540FGZ is a more powerful unit than the 360 version, but with a higher price tag to match though.

I'm no expert but here's my understanding of flash range. The maximum GN (Guide Number) of the AF540 is 54, while for the AF360 it's 36. Divide this number by the aperture value that you are using to get the effective range of the flash in metres.

So if you're using the AF540 and an aperture of F6, then your range is 9 metres (or 54/6). If you're any further from the subject than that then the flash will be of no benefit.

Hope that helps?
