Metz 58 or AF540FGZ as replacement flash.

The Metz has more zoom so it can throw the flash light further but I believe the Pentax is the more powerfull on when they are using the same zoom range.
The Pentax 540 is btw preciesly twice as powerful as the 360 to give you an idea.
I wouldn't worry too much about the powers of these two flashes but i would look at the interface and get the one you like the most based on that, but that's a personal thing so we can't decide that for you.

having not used a pentax flash gun, though i had a sigma st500 super which was great and serviced me well for some years, it was only when upgraded to a metz 58af 1, i noitced how much faster the recycle time where and how much more powerful it was over the sigma, and also easyler to adjust, and build is very good on the metz, id say your best bet if you can is get your hands on both and see for your self. hope that helps

Thanks for the comments and advice guys.
The guide is very helpful and VERY detailed. I'm leaning towards the Metz now but there's a few other options in there also. A bit more reading to be done before I commit to one or the other I think.

Thanks to everyone for the useful comments.
I decided to take the plunge and bought myself a Metz 58 AF-1. Picked it up 2nd hand on eBay for a decent price.
So I guess I'll be selling the AF360FGZ in the Classifieds now! Have to replenish the bank account somewhat.

I couldn't justify having the 2 flashes. I know I wouldn't make use of them. I mostly shoot bands live in concert so single flash is all I need for that.
Plus - I need the cash from the sale of the AF360 to cover some of the cost of the new Metz!

I hope you enjoy the new flash. By all means check out the features, especially these two:
The secondary "reflector" (actually it's a flash) allows you to beam forward some fill light while using the main flash as a bounce. Can work wonders on portraits.
The HSS mode gives you the ability to pick a faster shutter speed than the sync rate, at the cost of a stop or two of maximum light. Nice for action.

btw the lost of light can be more then what you say, the faster the shutterspeed the more light you lose.

I think that both of those features will be very useful when taking shots of the bands. The secondary flash will hopefully bring out some extra detail in the shots. And certainly any increase in shutter speed is welcome - you should see how fast some of these guys move on stage!!

Generally I'm shooting in very poor light (often backlit). Using flash is never a problem. There's usually a few of us photographers at shows and the bands never mind. It's taken for granted.

Well, sure. Wasn't meaning my comments to stand in for a full read of the manual! Just a couple suggestions. I find however that one or two stops of faster shutter speed is all that's needed. Unless the band are performing on horseback or something.

I currently own a Pentax AF360FGZ flash but am thinking of upgrading to something with a bit more power / range.
I've been looking at both the AF540FGZ and the Metz 58 AF-1. I've read elsewhere that the Metz has a bit more range than the Pentax unit but just wondering if anyone could make a recommendation before I "splash the cash".
