make sure you make it clear in the listing and title that it's an SMC, as the Takumar Bayonet version doesn't fetch as much and is much more common.

much like the rest of Optics and indeed Physics in general IMHO

As John says though, takes a while to get your head around, I'm half way through a PhD in X-Ray Optics and I haven't got it all sorted in my head yet!

We're all learning, it's just some of us are further along than others.

The Sigma 28-200 has a very short throw on it's focus, which makes it a pain to focus manually but lightning fast in AF.

I imagine it would make a good "traveling light" walking around pair with the 12-24, even if that combination does initially seem unusual since you're paring one of the best lenses in any mount (12-24) with an all purpose high ratio zoom.

I use Energiser Lithiums in my *istDL2. Actually come to think of it I haven't run a set flat in it yet! It's my second body so doesn't see the use my K10D gets, but it's taken over 1000 shots on one set and is still showing full power.

Over time the NiMHs are almost certainly cheaper, but the Lithiums last so long and have a 10 year shelf life so you can stock up with spares and not worry about them.

If you want a long Pentax zoom which will work with your MZ-M in all modes the FA 100-300 is the answer of the two available now. The FAJ will only work in modes where you would have the aperture ring set to A anyway, ie P and Tv.

Steve is right in that the 80-320 is a better lens but you'd have to find one first.

to do in camera B&W properly would need a way to change the filter in front of the sensor.
Simply removing the Bayer array colour filter will do the job.
The resolution will increase with 3X for red and blue colours and 2X for green when doing that.

You could still shoot colour if you like with the help of filters.
So first you place a red filter and take a photo, then a blue and a green one, you could even use more I believe but that's enough to get an accurate colour image in the end.
Not usefull for portrait but it can be used for product shots and maybe landscapes.
You will end up with a sharper photo this way then with a Bayer array.
Everything you say is true, but I can't imagine any company producing a camera which can ONLY do black and white. The best chance of something like this happening would be on systems like the Leica R9 where they could produce a B&W back and the system is a niche one anyway.

maybe I'm just not very picky but I've only very rarely been able to get noticeable flare or contrast loss out of an SMC lens unless it has a filter on. Even when it does happen a hand is much more portable than a lens hood IMO.

I use the hood on my Tamron 300 and there it certainly makes a difference, but very rarely does it prove necessary on my Pentax lenses

not me, I was using somewhat more lens when I saw the red arrows!

Hoods on Pentaxes are for protection IMO. Oh and to stop the other brands getting too jealous of SMC of course.
