Are you PENTAX MAN ?

Went to see the Red Arrows landing at the local airport yesterday and while there noticed this person with a K100D Super (I think). I was so suprised to see another Pentax user I was lost for words.

I can't think any member here would use their Pentax WITHOUT a lens hood, would they ? ? ?

I hadn't realised that, that was such I crime And I have actual lost my small one anyway, so I am afriad that I would Do I need to be excommunicated and hand in my Pentax equipment and go back to point and shot

Absolutely, I'll be round to confiscate your gear. Although even a P&S camera is of limited use in solitary confinement.

Only kidding, of course not Jeanette. I'm occasionally guilty of that particular crime, but seldom in sunlight.

It could be worse, they give the death penalty for tax evasion in China, god only knows what you'd get if you were caught with a Pentax and no hood.

Just to confirm my sentance. The first photographic safari I went on in Kenya, I never used the hood as I didn't know what it was mean't for. When I asked someone, they said it reduced glare and that it was personal preferance. So I hapy continued without it Where do I have to leave my kit

As recent events prove it's not me!

I'm guilty of not using lens hoods, I find they get in the way, break or disappear.

I always use a hood but then I don't use filters so they are a bit of protection for the lens.

You don't need to leave your kit anywhere, the Pentax Police are on to you, they'll collect it.

Now, on a serious note, I fit the lens hood to protect my front element rather than fit a cheap filter which degrades IQ, if only a little.

I took some images of a dragonfly sitting on my washing line last weekend. Great pose but the shots were ruined by my having left a Hoya HMC UVA filter on my Sigma 180mm macro lens. All the images had a ghosting effect which I believe was due to internal reflections from the filter.

So, I use hoods, not filters for lens protection.

When I was in Uluru (ayers rock) just recently, a German couple approached me and asked me to take thier picture with the rock in the background, he had a K20 with a Sigma 17-70 (with no hood) and she had a Nikon D300, I happily took a couple of shots.

We started talking about camera brands before he asked if he could borrow my Sigma 10-20 for a few shots, we swapped cameras after removing and switching memory cards, took a few shots and went happily on our way. Nice couple

not me, I was using somewhat more lens when I saw the red arrows!

Hoods on Pentaxes are for protection IMO. Oh and to stop the other brands getting too jealous of SMC of course.

A well designed lens hood reduces flare and improves contrast. The front element protection is a bonus feature as far as I am concerned. My lenses are all fitted with hoods and never leave home without them.

It did strike me during a recent trip to the Lake District, that of none of the Canikons that I came across had hoods fitted.
