I presume you aren't going to have a 645D for us to look at?

(I know the answer to this is going to be no, I just really really want it to be yes!)

the key question to ask yourself is this:

what pictures do I want to take which I cannot take effectively with the kit zoom?

The answer to this question will determine what other lens or lenses you want. The Pentax kit zoom is actually quite a good standard zoom so I wouldn't bother with a direct replacement initially.

perhaps he means that 50% of the time we can get out because we have weather sealed cameras (the other 50% even a Pentax would give up)

If you want to use the graphics card to do GPGPU processing for Photoshop, go for an NVidia Geforce based card with as many Stream Processors as possible. The ATI/AMD cards can theoretically do GPGPU stuff but it's no where near as mature at this point.
Where do you base that on, do you might have a benchmark Mongoose?
From what I know the OpenCL is the most support standard and Nvidai and ATI both use that so the difference is small besides that Adobe premier CS5 wants Cuda/Nvidia for the mercury playback engine.
Admittedly I haven't used it on Photoshop, but on the basis of my attempts to use either in Matlab/Oracle I couldn't find a way to utilise the ATi chip's capability at all, whereas NVidia dish out the necessary software for free.

If PS uses OpenCL it's probably more of an even playing field.

If I wanted to be sure of being able to use GPGPU acceleration though, I'd definitely buy an NVidia for now.

What I'd really like is to convince my supervisor that he needs to buy me an Nvidia Tesla based machine, but I can't see that happening somehow.

both my K10D and my (unsealed) *istDL2 have been out in the rain. I keep them as dry as is practical, particularly the DL2 since it isn't sealed, but both have got wet and neither have missed a beat.

I like to have good lenses so I can't blame them when it all goes wrong.

Years ago I had a Vivitar 100-300 F5.6-6.7. It was a verifiably terrible lens but I was only a beginnner. This left me totally confused as to whether I was doing it wrong or the lens was just pants (bit of both, of course!)

Now with beasts like my Tamron 300 F2.8, SP Macro 90, Zeiss 35, and various Pentax's I know it's my fault when the shot is soft.

of course there's a point well short of DA* standards beyond which the differences are generally not noticable to the naked eye and therefore irrelavent for the majority of cases.

for my last job I developed a software program to take rectified photographs of walls and output autoCAD drawings of the bricks.

does that count as making money from photography?

currently I am developing new and interesting ways of using X-ray cameras.

If you limit "photography" to artistic weilding of a DSLR, then no, hobby only.
