It would be a mistake to just evaluate sharpness when considering a lens
That is very true.

Colour and flare handling is stunning.
This is one thing Pentax glass is renowned for and is why im still consiering getting the DA16-45 and 12-24 instead of say the Sigma 10-20 and 17-70.

Although I still think we underrate non pentax glass on here. That said, as 2 expirenced members I'll trust your judgement that the 12-24 is a decent lens.

I've been considering this lens for a while.

But most magazine reviews suggest its a soft lens. I'm not sure if the Tokina version is the same as the Pentax version but that also has had some unfavourable reviews when compared to the Sigma 10-20 in other mounts.

That said, all reviews have said that the 12-24 is decent at F8 - F11 though.

I know we are loyal to Pentax but at times I think we are too loyal and overrate some of their lenses.

If moneys no object then a Nikon D3 - after having had a play with one -THAT is a camera that does everything i would want it to. Fantastic ISO6400 and the ability to focus on a moving object.

Money would have to be no object to afford some decent lenses to do it justice though.

Thats a good point, but the 2 mark1 lenses i've tried at 6mp have both been soft at the edges.

I thought that the mark1 was renowned for being very good (for a kit lens) at the centre of the frame and very soft at the edges??

Interestingly, I was reading What Digital camera in tescos the other day when I was shopping with the wife.

They had some Pentax lens reviews. They were comparing the 18-55II kit lens, the 16-45 and the 16-50.

According to their imatest ratings the markII kit lens was quite a bit sharper across the board (i.e in the 18-55 range and the 18-55's aperture range) then the 16-45.

WDC also reckoned that at 35mm the kit lens (mark1) was sharper than some primes they had tested the previous month.

I know I'm very tempted myself. But, I fancy a 12-24 lens and cant make up my mind:

What about the GX-10? Park are selling this for £279 with the kit lens or with the kit lens and 50-200mm for £349. All brand new with a 2 year warranty.

Perhaps it is a fair price, but do you realise that a K10D can be bought new with a 2 year warranty for about £290 and the GX10 for £280 (again with a 2 year warranty)

If Pentax advertised their cameras perhaps some magazines may rate their cameras and lenses a bit better. I mean when was the last time a Canikkon camera or lens got a poor write up??

I suppose the same goes for shops. If Pentax had more of a presence in the likes of Jessops / Currys etc. they may sell more bodies....
