It's not the .EXE file that you copy to the root of the card. You would double click the .exe which is a self extracting application. One or more files will be extracted, one of which is the image file having a .BIN extension. It is that .BIN file that needs to be copied to the root folder of the card.
You only need to upgrade to the latest firmware, skip all the in between ones, they are not necessary as each upgrade incorporates all the changes in any previous upgrades.

The most important instruction which you should not ignore is to perform the upgrade with fully charged batteries. The process takes up to a couple of minutes and you don't want to run the risk of power failing part way through.
Essentially,
you download the firmware image file,
copy it to the root of a formatted card of the type that suits your model camera,
Put the card in the camera with power off,
press and hold the menu button and turn on the camera.
The camera will display current firmware version, and the version you have put on the card. It'll give you the option to upgrade.

One flash and a silver reflector will do very well. I have a couple of Lastolite backgrounds that come in handy for this sort of thing. 25 portraits might take the best part of a day including travelling and setting up so I would charge my daily rate, calculated as follows D=(y/365)where y is the amount of money you would like to earn in a year.
Of course, you could use 365 if you want to grind yourself into an early grave.

Why not just change the battery anyway? I would, simply to have the reassurance of knowing that it's not going to die on me the first time I need it.
A photo or two of the beast might help.

Any Pentax K (bayonet) mount lens will work with your camera. Some restrictions apply however. You'll get a reasonable list of the restrictions from the K20D camera manual which you can download from www.pentaximaging.com.
My recommendation would be to stick to lenses having the A setting on the aperture ring, or lenses that have no aperture ring. leae he A lenses set to A and set the aperture from the body.
SMC Pentax-A lenses are manual focus, SMCP-F, FA, D-FA & DA are autofocus. The D-FA, DA and DA* lenses are optimized for use on DSLR's.
Any lens with the * (star) suffix is a top grade lens, fast, and expensive.
For now, I'd avoid buying SMCP or SMCP-M lenses as there are exposure/metering issues when used with the later Pentax/Sasmsung DSLR's.

Kim Coxon's (forum member) site, www.pentax-manuals.com is another good source of manuals.

Could you explain, in simple terms, how (exactly) is the front element sub-standard to warrant your non-mint status?
