I don't think that is an issue with the lens. The K10D's AF sensors need very strong contrast which is why it isn't very good in low light or flatter scenes.
This is the only lens I've had any problem with, other than the well documented BF/FF issues with the K10D. A K20D is on its way to me, we'll see how that copes.

Well, I suspect that your chance of getting a bad 16-50 is actually rather low, and if it is bad, your supplier will change it.

I've had two DA*16-50mm lenses, both with focussing issues, failing to focus lock on an evenly lit contrasty landscape scene.

The 2nd one is on it's way back to SRS for another replacement. I hope I get a good one this time as I have lost a little faith in this lens.

Unlocker had a similar issue I think. That said, don't let it put you off buying one, they're not all bad, and if you buy from a reputable retail supplier you'll have no trouble replacing it if it is faulty.

The images are first class from all of the DA* lens range. They are heavier though, which is why I have a 'proper' kit, and a 'lightweight' kit.

I was going to try and get a good handheld moon shot last night, but I couldn't.

You see, my SMC Pentax Bigger-than-the-Bigma 135-600mm 1:6.7 zoom + 1.7 AF converter makes the max focal length 1020mm. The K10D's SR system only goes up to 800mm

Even on a tripod, with 2 sec delay + mirror lockup, I can't keep the darned thing still enough anyway. If a moth flies within 20 metres, the camera and lens shakes for a week. But that's down to my tripod/head combination . . . which I'm working on.

If I remember correctly, you need a rubber bezel removing tool to twist the bezel off (the round plate that shows the lens data and sits between the glass and the filter thread). The filter threaded shroud I believe is held in place by a few screws. Tighten the screws and refit the bezel.

I think it should be as simple as that . . . but it might not be.

The lens I fixed was a SMCP-A 50mm 1:1.7 and might be a bit different to yours.

Have you tried saving three differently exposed JPG's (-2/0/+2 stops) from just one raw image, perhaps the middle one of your 3?

Try blending/HDR'ing them and see what the difference is. It would lose the blurry clouds at least.

The 18-55 MkII is supposed to have a higher resolution to match what is achievable with a K20D.
So do you think Peter there is any point upgraiding the lens when I get my k10. Would I see any benifit or is the lens simply designed to work with the new sensor in the k20.
On a K10D, I doubt you'd notice much difference between the 2 versions of 18-55, but you'll upgrade your camera body one day. If you already have the non-MkII version, stick with it for now.

IMHO: Both the DA 16-45mm and DA*16-50mm lenses are far superior to both of the 18-55 lenses.

I'm surprised anybody remembers the 8" floppy. Bernoulli (might be only one l in Bernouli) drives anyone?

Very funny article, thanks for the link.

Edit reason: Spelling correction.

JohnMcD,

I've lost count of the number of times that I, and others, have advised you to get your camera sorted. You've got a dud there, but it can be fixed or replaced. You've simply chosen not to go that (logical) route and instead, sell off some very good lenses.

We (the forum) do not understand why you will not get your DS fixed.
