Are you sure the camera is set to centre point focus and it hasn't been set to select focus points? If that is the problem, then selecting an off centre focus point by mistake could be the answer.

If not, then a warranty repair or repair if it is a problem.
Hi John,

This was the first thing I checked and it wasn't the cause of the problem.

I have spoken to SRS today and as the K5 is still in warranty they have said to return it to them for sending back to Pentax for a repair.

Regards,

Chris.

* Quick Update *

I've done a reset to default settings and it's still the same.

I have also done a few test shots and although the focus points aren't where they should be the image quality still looks fine.

So, to summarise the original problem....

When looking through the view finder all the focus points have moved over towards the left of the focusing screen.

The K5 is still under warranty from SRS, do I send it back to them to see if there's an underlying problem?

Regards,

Chris.

Hi all - Sorry I've not been around for a while.

My son has a K5 (Mk1) and I'm not sure if there's a focusing issue with it.

When the focus is set to single point and then focused on an object the red focus square focuses to the left of centre when looking through the view finder, it's not by much but it's enough to notice. It's just about on the left hand 'open bracket' ( ) symbol that is in the middle of the standard focusing screen.

At first I thought he'd played around with the selective focus point setting but when I checked it was set to the middle.

I did a check by selecting different focus points, first to the left and then to the right of centre and something seems to have moved over as the focus points were to one side of the lines on the focusing screen.

Can the focus screen accidently move to one side and how do I check to see if it has actually moved?

Regards,

Chris.

P.S - Just done another check and does the same in manual focus too.

Here are the first photos taken with my new 50-135 DA*

These were taken a couple of weeks ago but I've only just found time to upload them.

Photo number 4 is quite a heavy crop.

Great set of photos.

The first photo in the set is my favourite.

Your panning technique is obviously much smoother than mine, Chris. I shall have to keep practising.

I also note that you used a K-5. Earlier in this thread I believe you commented about apparent SR differences between the K-5 and K-5 II, and that with the K-5 II and a 300mm lens you turn SR off. Other than the autofocus differences between the 2 camera bodies, I wonder what else could be going on. Is the AF linked to SR in some way?

I think you could well be correct, Karel, that a low enough pan rate is likely to be successful. I was doing my best to rotate the whole body rather than just the camera, but most of the time the pan rate was quite high - possibly higher than needed for the stock cars.
My K5II does seem to lock on slightly faster than my K5.

I forgot to mention that the photo in this thread was taken from the seated position as at Coventry Stadium you have to remain seated while the racing is on.

Regards, Chris.
