Another cheaper option is the Sigma 50-200mm OS HSM with the same near silent af and very good image quality
I'd second the above quote.

My son wanted a new camera for his 21st birthday and of course I recommended a Pentax.

After he'd had a go with mine I made a quick call to SRS and this morning he took delivery of a new K5.

I think I'd better hide all my lenses now.

Regards,

Chris.

Great set of shots.

What Pentax and lens did you use and what shutter speed did you use for 11, 12 and 13?

Regards, Chris.

Nice work , love number three has that mini got larger front wheels ? I put Hillman imp wheels on my 1100cc mini van when I was young and foolish.. jeff
Jeff, not sure about the wheel sizes on the mini, but I've noticed that while walking around the pits a lot of the cars do run different sizes between the front and rear.

Thanks for the comments guys. I was very pleased with the IQ from this lens, I'll definitely be using it again for my infield work.

Regards, Chris.

Here are a few with a Sigma 50-200 OS HSM that SRS are now selling for £99.00

I've had this lens quite a while now and don't seem to use it that often so I thought I'd give it a go last weekend at a local track where I am their 'official' infield photographer.

I was quite pleased with the results.

K5II + Sigma 50-200 OS HSM ( camera SR turned off, lens OS turned on )

Chris,

I have only recently bought the 300, and Mallory on Sunday was the first motor sport event for it. I found the 50-135 AF was noticeably slower, and whilst it was still got some good shots with it, I soon reverted to the 300.
I decided that the next time I raid the piggy bank, maybe a da* 200 to partner the 300, or possibly investigate a 60-250 or Sigma/Tamron 70-200 2.8 if they lock on faster. But I've spent enough for now!

I find the 50-135 is capable of getting some great images, and although quite usable for action shots, ideally it should lock on faster.
I've got the 60-250 DA* and it's not the fastest focusing lens for motorsport but having said that I've had some great shots from it.

I've also thought about the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 but I like the fact that the Pentax 50-135 DA* is weather sealed.

Regards,

Chris.

Well, I've got back from my trip to Mallory today and have gone through all the pictures I took, mostly with my DA* 300, with a few on the DA* 50-135 (some with the 50-135 + Tamron 1.4 teleconverter).

I spent the whole day with SR turned off, using a shutter speed of 1/1000, and came away with high proportion of decently sharp images. So for me, an early indication (although obviously a lot more experimenting to be done) that the K5 IIs and DA* 300/50-135 combinations both worked well with SR off.

If any of you have any more comments about the use of SR, I'd be glad to hear them.

Some samples from today (straight out of camera with no processing so far, but some cropping) - still room for improvement, I know, but generally getting better than previous efforts.
Percy,

How did you find the focus speed on 50-135 DA* for motorsport?

I'm thinking about getting the same lens but a few reviews I've read mentioned that is wasn't a fast focusing lens and wouldn't recommend it for sports photography.

Regards,

Chris.

Just a wild punt - but maybe it's an interaction between your shooting style and the cameras. Does the K5II achieve focus faster than the 5? If so it might be that you are getting the shot faster and the stabilisation doesn't have time to settle.
Yes I think the K5II does lock on faster than the K5.

I don't know if it's just me but since the last K5 firmware update I think my K5 locks on pretty quick now too, and I also think the low level light performance has improved. I used my K5 under floodlights at Birmingham last night and I must say I got some great shots.

But going back to the subject of SR, I kept the SR on for all the meeting, a couple of examples below.

K5 + 300mm DA* ~ SR on.

All at 1/160, last photo at ISO 6400.
