I have the FA 80-320mm zoom, and it is much softer at 320mm than at 200-250mm. This produces the glow...
Thank you , that seem to make sense... having never tested my 80-320mm in these conditions, I maybe have never noticed it before

I think it is also worth pointing out that camera shake is a problem at these distances. I try to get round this by using the 2 second delay which does a mirror-up at the start of the sequence.

Glyn
Am I am I correct in assuming that the mirror up feature you mention on 2 sec delay was on a K10D?
If so, how did you find that out, did I miss it in the manual?

I 'attempted' to shoot the close proximity of the moon and venus last night with a pathetic result as you can see, this was the best of 'em

Woz, my first attempt at night sky photography and was disappointed to see the result of this glow as shown about the moon, when it was actually at that moment a clear sky.

What have I done wrong, any ideas from you night sky photographers?
Taken on tripod @ 100asa, F5.6, 320mm, focus distance set to infinity

Hi Lilly

enjoying the K10D I see

I remember you getting it a few months back. Have you brought those lenses listed since then or did you already have them ???

Pete
Hi Pete,

Yes, well loving my K10D, no complaints at all, best decision ever...

Apart from the 18-55 kit lens that came with it, the rest are what I bought 15+ years ago for the Penax Z1 (another superb camera) and I can verify they work superbly with K10D, so if you see any secondhand go for them, AF is smooth as a babies bum, the 135mm results are amazing, my fav lens, they are all SMC-FA.

this is what we 've been getting up to down these 'ere parts this week................Dancing here, prancing there, jigging, jogging everywhere" To the beat of the big bass drum, elegant gentlemen and their ladies dance in and out of Churches, shops and houses. The day starts with the 7.00 am dance (originally for the servants of the gentry) with the Gentlemen wearing shirt and tie and the ladies wearing light summer dresses. This is followed by a boisterous dance cum play called the Hal-an-Tow, Verses of this have reference to Robin Hood, the Spanish Armada and St George and the dragon.
At noon the main dance of the day is started. This is the formal dance with the men wearing morning dress and the ladies magnificent ball gowns and hats that could be the envy of "Ascot." (BTY way lots of grog is consummed too)

thought I wd share it with you, constructive Crits welcome

Pete,

It's a nice image, but it demonstrates my main complaint about HDR images - they tend to look rather "flat". I prefer to see a bit of range from dark to light.

I've only tried HDR once so far http://www.ephotozine.com/photo/601388/large and it too, looks a bit flat to me.
I agree, when I look at these HDRs I always think there is something missing...
I have it now

Lilly,
I can't see the latest detail. But from your description it seems that what you see in that latter detail is chromatic abberation, so the effect in the upper right corner must be something else...

Prieni
Sorry about that, moment of madness, I must have emptied the files out of the Bucket!

I have since been researching this further and John may be correct in suggesting this may be the problem, I quote Scott Kelby re: sharpening

" the more you use it, the more discerning you'll become about it (you basically becoming a sharpening snob), and at some point, you'll apply some heavy sharpening to an image and notice little color halos. you'll grow to hate these halos, and you'll go out of your way to avoid them. In fact, you'll go as far as to use this next sharpening technique, which is fairly popular with pros shooting digital (at least with the sharpening-snob crowd)".........Luminosity Sharpening..............

guess what I shall be doing this evening!

Well, I sharpened only in CS2 at end of PP and only at 100%, I was using a monopod with SR on, def. not motion blur.
Preini, here is the detail of the white spot you mentioned, just seems to be a little cyan fringing, but not as bad as previous detail or maybe you will disagree?

I agree it does seem to be more of a halo effect, perhaps because of the light background contrasting sharply with the stone.
So, maybe it is not CA but just a mix of circumstances when I took the shot.
I was just curious to see if any of you could immediately recognise this annoying imperfection and whether I could avoid it in the future.

thanks Lilly

I have just been hunting my local churchyard for lichen this pm with my 50mm 1.4., eagerly downloaded to develop my raws and was intially well pleased with results, however when going closer in as you can see from detail I have cropped for illustration there is a halo effect on top left, is this what you call CA that I have heard about but not actually noticed in my images myself?
Is it present in ALL lenses?
Is it more evident in wide open apertures?
Is there not a lot one can do about it?
