As to long term storage, the Archaeological Data Service whose job it is to archive digital files for archaeology (and convert them en masse to a new format if needed) insist on tif files for images. I believe this is true for other data services too.
Best, Kris.
Oh yes it will be bigger! It has to be the K10D is 10.2 MP and the K20D is 14.6MP.
K20D
DNG = 25.6MB
K10D
DNG = 16MB
Galoot' effort is something else and should get full marks for the effort that was assaulted on this powerful image...

... but it won't be a backup if you don't have any other copy of your pictures. Then it will be the sole storage medium and will be at least as vulnerable (if not more vulnerable) to damage and loss as SD cards, while being bigger and heavier as well.

For some reason the feeling appears to be that a hard disc based device is more reliable. I'm not convinced - anything that has moving parts and stops and starts is inherently liable to failure.
I agree with you. I'd buy a shed load of medium capacity cards and then sell them off on my return.

Mine doesn't have a screen - it is purely a storage device. We too were looking for something not too pricey (which cut out the Epsons) that was easy to carry to put photos on when we went to Tanzania, and opted for the most basic model we could find. It works purely as a hard drive so doesn't need software for handling different file types. Downside of that is of course that you can't check if the photos have been transferred properly. Up side is that the battery lasts a lot longer on a charge as we are not looking at the photos! A not unimportant feature when staying in a tent in the middle of the Serengeti, with no electricity.
We would probably go for the VP550 or similar now if we were to replace the one we have.
Have you thought about one of the mini laptops like the Asus EEE of the small Acer?

A vista is:
1. a view or prospect, esp. one seen through a long, narrow avenue or passage, as between rows of trees or houses.
2. such an avenue or passage, esp. when formally planned.
3. a far-reaching mental view: vistas of the future.
From that definition I am not sure any of the shots submitted so far are vistas!
Cheers, Kris.

Lilly,
How long are you going to India for? My tip is check out the south - much more relaxed and with some major attractions (Kerala's canals, Cochin, Tamil Nadu temples, Hampi, Badami [hardly anyone goes here and it's stunning), Bijapur...) which are as impressive if not as well known as those in say Agra and Rajasthan. The food's better too - southern Indian cuisine is just fantastic. People are much nicer too. My wife (who is black British) and I got tired of all the hassle we got in the north. It's the most bigoted place in the world I have travelled (by a country mile). Constant refrain of 'Black and white, black and white' wherever we went. I snapped and got into a fight (the first time since school) outside the Taj Mahal (that monument to love) because someone pointed at my wife and called me a dirty bastard! The hassle's not confined to race either. On the other hand, the south is a different place entirely. Goa's nice too - though more for the food (which is superb) and towns than the beaches (after the East African coast these are rather underwhelming).
actually this will be my 6th trip to India and agree the south especially Kerala is very beautiful and very very friendly. However, I have already had 4 trips to Kerala & Goa. I visited Agra Golden triangle etc. in '84.
This trip will be a month in Jaipur staying in a SC apartment concentrating on food photography amongst other distractions I am sure!
Then headed north west to Jodphur, Jaisalmer (camel desert festivals), Udaipur, Mt Abu, Patan for Jain culture, stopping off in a favourite place Rajkot in Gujarat, might even get to Rann of Kutch!
Ending trip in Mumbai where we have friends to visit. I will be avoiding Agra at all costs anyway, seeing it in '84 was the best time I think!
We are quite seasoned travellers to India and even we have noticed how it has changed and not always for the good over the past 20 years and not so damn cheap either!
However, I never tire of going there as long as I have a couple of years break in between as it is pretty full on!
I would recommend anyone who has not been before and would like to visit India to try Kerala first and go and stay in Fort Cochin for starters, it is a lovely place to chill and soak up the culture and the best seafood! If anyone wants to see pics of there just ask - I can post them up.
Still worrying me what to do re laptop or storage device, I am going around in circles wondering what if this and that. Have to make up my mind soon tho!
thats all for now, thanks for tips anyway everyone
