we've had a few nice sunsets in the last week or two, and I finally got around to shooting one. Both of these were a bit of a surprise, and not what I thought I'd get, but I'm glad about that. Got to get lucky sometime I guess..

Technically a touch better than Lamp Light, and again taken at Southsea this evening. I added titles to both to postcardify them, and it seems writing all over my images helps.

that'll giveyou a start on the basics, but it will always depend on what you want from the shot in the end. Have a quick read of the link, and we'll answer any questions you have afterwards.
Hope that helps,

Nice, but a bit too dark really.
That was the effect I was going for..
It's actually darkened from the original, as it gets rid of the distracting areas of the houses to the right, the one with the obvious gable of which, is painted white. If it wasn't red, orange or blue, then it had to go.. leaving all distracting areas as just a silhouette. It was taken with enough daylight to walk around without the lights being on, although the original is perhaps a stop under-exposed. I'll have another play with it, to perhaps get the colours brighter, but keeping the silhouettes where they are.

The first..

I think my technical failings have been lucky for once. As usual, just a bit of cropping, levels and a bit of UsM to get to this. It's Southsea Prom taken this evening.

I'll use it to work out the sizes when opening images as layers.. but then I use GIMP rather than PS, so I don't think I have the facility that you have. :

just dug this up..
Aspect Ratio Calculator
and thought it might be useful to you. If you want to reduce or enlarge an image keeping the aspect ratio correct, then this works it out for you. For instance you have a jpg still at camera size. ie. 3008x2000 pixels, and want it reduced to say 800 pixels in width to post on the web. How do you work out the depth? Apart from a calculator..
Enter the size of the source image in the top line, and one of the dimensions for the destination image, like so..

Click on Calculate and you get..

so you now know that to keep the same aspect ratio, your image needs to be 800x532 pixels. This can be used for paper sizes or anything else rectangular that you need to work out.
Hope that helps someone,

I haven't been this last year, since getting the DL, but the Highlands really are a photographer's dream. IMO some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe (and up there with the best in the world, although I haven't been there to find out.. )
I really would like some misty shots of Rannoch Moor next time I'm there.
