as you have the bottom end of the range covered, you might want to invest a few £ (if it's as I assume, a manual lens, probably change from a tenner) on a 2x converter. That way you'll have a 56-400 zoom lens. I have a Soligor 70-210 that has the same problem, but being a fast macro, I just use it as either a long zoom, with a 2x converter, or attach extention tubes to make a very long macro lens. You can stand a few feet from insects etc, and use the lens to get close. It doesn't frighten them away..

calibration isn't setting up the monitor so it "looks good".. it's setting up the monitor so that it's accurate. This means that if I look at an image here, and so does one of our members across the world, both with properly calibrated monitors, they should look the same.
There are plenty of threads about monitor calibration here, and you can always ask for specifics as well.

Don't be afraid to try different angles (looking from above etc)
Take either of the above shots from from above.. I assume you're a little taller than your friend's daughter.. but make sure she's looking at the camera, but by moving her eyes rather than her whole head. Two advantages, it'll make her look more "doe eyed", which is always nice, and it gets rid of any problems with a potentially distracting background.

as Taliety and Reuben don't seem to be included above.. well you haven't escaped.

L to R; Daniel - Reuben - Taliety
(Taliety, I'll refer to you as is, as I don't know if you've ever used your first name here, and it wouldn't be right of me to divulge it without your permission)
Just need a closer one of Tim for the full set now.

seems I got here first, so here's a couple of shots of St. Albans' Abbey..

ist* DL | FA 100-300 (@100) | 1/4000 sec @f4.5 | ISO 200

ist* DL | DA 18-55 (@43) | 1/350 sec @f13 | ISO 200

ist* DL | DA 18-55 (@18 ) | 1/80 sec @f9.5 | ISO 200 | (perspective adjusted slightly)
The last was taken nearly flat on my back, and has been posted as testament to the fact that in a group, you don't feel silly doing such things..
I beleive Taliety has a similar shot..
And as an edit.. the towers add to the spikes on the fence.. of course I intended that exact effect when I took the shot.. ahem.

haven't seen as many pictures here recently, so I thought I'd start..
(Hit F11 if it's too tall for your monitor)
It would have looked nicer with an old steam engine billowing smoke, but they weren't running. I just liked the way the track snaked up the shot.
I've added a very faintly noised (well, I know what I mean) sepia layer to it.. almost un-noticeable, but it does add a bit of age to the shot compared to the original
