Actually, and a massive brain wave here, what about:
A 35MP or so FF sensor that, (get this), discards the additional outside information when the system/user identifies that a non FF capable lens is attached. At which point the camera functions as a 20MP or so APS-C sized crop sensor.
The above should allow for FF AND address the predictable complaint of "now I have to get a new range of lenses" criticisms. Best of both worlds right there!
The mirrorless version of this system should sort your issue Jules!

Seriously it's getting very frustrating seeing all these come up here, I really want one!

Unless a viewfinder is required, I think the MX-1 is a great buy, especially at its current bargain prices.
As the comments of others in the thread seem to suggest, Pentax does have most of the right ingredients - but they are not (yet) baked into just one body.
I have been thinking for at least a couple of years of getting a second camera that's light and portable. The choice is much better than it was. I nearly fell for the RX100, but just didn't like handling it (and they forgot the viewfinder); my current favourite is the X100s, but the price ... ouch! I'm sure my prevarications will go on long enough for Pentax to come up with my ideal.
They have all the bits but scattered across the range.

I'm fully aware of that, a few other members/ex-members of this forum have been using it as a second body/primary body. The quality is very good but the I think the GR would suit me better in every other way. I'm not wedded to only ever buying Ricoh I just think that there will be some developments soon that make it the right option. The GR is so good that is worth waiting a while to see what will happen - I want to get something that I now I will be happy using for five years. It is the same with full frame for me. I've always been prepared to give Ricoh a reasonable time to deliver products and this year is now right to do that. I think they will.
I just can't get my head round the price in comparison to a to what you get with a K5.
Need to change my way at looking at that conundrum. ..

Everybody seems to be liking the MX-1, and given that I've made A3 competition pictures successfully with it, quality may not be as much of an issue after all. It will be an issue at high ISO levels, but there are limits to what it can do.
It seems once people get over the design of the K-01 it starts to look as though there's something very useful there after all. I'd still like one. I have my Marc Newson K-01 case in its box waiting for when I buy one.

Jules i will no doubt get shot for suggesting this! If you want a quick grab and go camera and have decided not to buy another K3 which I would do, have you thought about one of the Fuji X cameras?
Benefits, small and light size, beautiful JPEGS straight out of the camera. I guess it all depends on what you want from a grab and go camera, but i would have thought size and weight would be a priority?
Going back to why I would buy another K3, when the price falls a little. The K3 is a superb camera for all kinds of photography, having two K3s will result in mirrored camera settings, so no issues with shooting different cameras (less thinking). Parity in terms of results, same sensor etc and you will be supporting the brand.
"I know that this will happen, I toyed with a Fuji Xe-2 (Really like the X-Cams) trouble is, I would need to buy more Lenses then, and not cheap ones either! Also it's not weather sealed, my one big bug with the X-Cams. GR was also a thought but a bit limiting to just it and a wide adapter and I'd want the viewfinder as well, so Expensive and more than a K5 which wrecks my head!
K5 it is I think and just a smattering of older small zooms or manual primes, NO LIMITEDS, they are definitely off...Err, limits!
I really want another K5II of some description probably the S because I can process the files in the same fashion as the K3, which means less time at the P.C.
The other reason for staying with a DSLR is the old reliability thing, I have not bought a Camera in the last five years that did not have something wrong with it, save for two Pentax's! An Xe-2 would not be able to simply perform double duty in lieu of a K3"
I really really liked my Xe-1 but it lacks weather sealing and in Cumbria, I have come to the conclusion that I can't do without that but the X's are lovely and should be tried by everyone (Alongside everyone trying Pentax of course!:wink.

What pentax should do is release a Sony NEX sized machine with the K-5 sensor.
Or go one step more to compete with the likes of the Sony A7 series

Many Thanks...

Jules, you can get second hand turret viewfinders that rotate, looking a bit like miniature TV camera lenses. They offer multiple focal lengths. I've sold two recently on eBay.
The Q and GR have optical viewfinders that are absolutely superb in terms of clarity. They have a price to match that quality.
Of course if you go down these routes the elegance of design disappears and you end up with a whole mass of alternative lenses and accessories...perhaps you might as well take the K-3!
The GR as a basic camera is terrific, but the add on wide lens is very Heath Robinson IMHO, turning an elegant design into an untidy hotch-potch. A technical term obviously!
Personally, I'd go for either a compact or a DSLR and forget more systems and lenses. It becomes very unwieldy.
The GR is an attractive option, I keep looking at that one to the extent that the girl in my local Wilkinsons Camera must think I fancy her or something. As you say it makes a lot of sense until you start bunging bits on it.
K-O1 Has come into the running of late as I feel I may just have to ty one, one day, Might buy a second hand one and get the AA taken off.
Problem with going compact-ish in Pentax world means gettin back into the Ltd's... AGAIN! That means ending up buying them all at the cost of ownnership alongside, obvioussly a Silver K3, thats not only beyond me but beyond most of us. (Addendum: This year is going to be my year, so everyone else back off, it's mine ok? If I need anotehr DSLR by the end of the summer I'll have the cash to get one, I've decided that, so hard push on the selling is coming this summer!). I don't want to end up with trinkets but if I go down that route I know I will. I have concluded that what I get must be suficiently different from A K3 and the DA*'s, and give me a different but enjoyable shooting experience/shooting discipline/ethos, and be sufficienty small and light/versatile enough that I want to take it with me everywhere. Must fit a lowepro Passport sling and leave room for me dinner too! I, like you John, have already bought the bag!
I am going to eschew the weather sealing as I can just take the K3 setup for those days but in the Summer as I said, I'll mostly be selling but would still like there to be a Camera around on these occasions that does not weigh me down.
