Question for Smeggy, maybe or others...

Specific to the K50, I'll be building up a small lightweight set up this year to hang up in the hallway at home to try to ensure I don't go out without, so to speak (I always regret it)!
Now I don't want two K3's but I do want two bodies, so I can't leave home with a bag full of Lenses ad no Camera (Believe me I have tried)!
So My conundrum is between the K5II/S and the K50.
I may get some nice manual Primes for, "Doing it Properly".
K5's: 14 Bit and good low light focus capability (But only on the AF Lenses of course)!
K50: Peaking.
The rest of the handling things I reckon I can put up with but how useful do you think I'd find peaking? You seem to get on well without it Smeggy even with your F1.2...
would I see a huge difference between fourteen and twelve bit files?
Must admit I've never compared...
Cheers Jules...

My viewfinder is 576,000,000 pixels.
My other viewfinder is 5.76,000,000.

No. I wouldn't choose on that basis. For the purpose you have (a 'grab at the door' quick 'n easy camera) is it really another SLR you're looking for?

You mean to say you are considering buying more kit Jules? I'm shocked!

On a serious note, unless you intend to do a lot of indoor shooting in low light, of subjects that don't move or only move very slowly, I don't think you will need focus peaking.

I don't think either the K-5iis or the K50 could be thought of as a lightweight setup, but my preference would be a K-5iis for all sorts of reasons.

I already have a K3 and K-5iis and love them both, trouble is I always want to take both of them out with me!

Although not for me, what about an MX-1?

Best regards

I know that this will happen, I toyed with a Fuji Xe-2 (Really like the X-Cams) trouble is, I would need to buy more Lenses then, and not cheap ones either! Also it's not weather sealed, my one big bug with the X-Cams. GR was also a thought but a bit limiting to just it and a wide adapter and I'd want the viewfinder as well, so Expensive and more than a K5 which wrecks my head!
K5 it is I think and just a smattering of older small zooms or manual primes, NO LIMITEDS, they are definitely off...Err, limits!
I really want another K5II of some description probably the S because I can process the files in the same fashion as the K3, which means less time at the P.C.
The other reason for staying with a DSLR is the old reliability thing, I have not bought a Camera in the last five years that did not have something wrong with it, save for two Pentax's! An Xe-2 would not be able to simply perform double duty in lieu of a K3.
Cheers Jules...

I like the MX-1, Really do but can't live with the sensor size, though I have seen some beautiful results from it, alas, I doubt they would ever be mine.
My ideal would be a Big Q with EVF but not the K-01, Mr Newsom forgot that he was not designing a Sideboard there!

I quite fancy the idea of focus peaking for the F/1.2 to be honest, but I have managed without it, although it's not easy to master.

for 12bit v 14bit files ... well the extra dynamic range is very useful for editing especially when shadow boosting, but for regular purposes you won't see a lot of difference.

To be honest for the grab at the door purposes I would consider a K-01, even though it's hideously ugly. You get the sensor size and I believe focus peaking ( ?? )

I frequently consider getting one and putting a small lens on it for the same purpose, but everytime I look at one I nearly throw up my breakfast, so yes I understand it's not an easy choice.

Yes the K-01 seems to be essentially a mirrorless K-30/K-50. Same sort of software, so focus peaking etc.

I've found the peaking useful mostly only for tripod shots, as if the scene is that depth of field critical then it's likely to be off if handheld. That said it's been good for the moon or long exposure via live view even when dark, but once again that's usually tripod based.

What pentax should do is release a Sony NEX sized machine with the K-5 sensor. Even mroe compact thanthe K-01

So basically an MX-1 styled unit, with interchangeable K mount lenses, but with the K5 series sensor...

Or go one step more to compete with the likes of the Sony A7 series

You're seriously not alone in this line of thinking.

The MX-1 is actively promoted as just the camera you are talking about, ideal for traveling. An MX-2 could have a fixed large aperture zoom lens, a larger sensor, honest mechanical image stabilisation, a bit of weather sealing and boom, something totally desirable to the masses.

Actually, and a massive brain wave here, what about:

A 35MP or so FF sensor that, (get this), discards the additional outside information when the system/user identifies that a non FF capable lens is attached. At which point the camera functions as a 20MP or so APS-C sized crop sensor.

The above should allow for FF AND address the predictable complaint of "now I have to get a new range of lenses" criticisms. Best of both worlds right there!

The mirrorless version of this system should sort your issue Jules!

I agree in principle, but there's nothing stopping anyone cropping out the "Vignetting" produced by sticking a crop sensor lens on an FF Camera themselves, and thus allowing use control of the amount of vignetting in the picture.

And yes a Pentax version of the Sony A7 would be marvellous, given we've seen what the Pentax Ltds can do on it.

But I'm talking about something compact and I'm not sure FF can go as small as the PENTAX K-01 or Sony NEX 5

Jules i will no doubt get shot for suggesting this! If you want a quick grab and go camera and have decided not to buy another K3 which I would do, have you thought about one of the Fuji X cameras?

Benefits, small and light size, beautiful JPEGS straight out of the camera. I guess it all depends on what you want from a grab and go camera, but i would have thought size and weight would be a priority?

Going back to why I would buy another K3, when the price falls a little. The K3 is a superb camera for all kinds of photography, having two K3s will result in mirrored camera settings, so no issues with shooting different cameras (less thinking). Parity in terms of results, same sensor etc and you will be supporting the brand.

I would like Pentax to make the MX-1 with a 1" sensor similar to the RX100. Such a camera is easy to keep on you at all times and is close to DSLR quality.

I have the RX100 and it's awesome; I just wish it had the superior form-factor and design of the MX-1....
