Having played with my 3rd party K-3 grip for a couple of days now, I can confirm that in the menu you can select which battery to use first(Auto, body, grip) and it will switch when one is depleted. You might only fit one battery in the grip, but there is a holder at the end of the battery tray to keep a spare SD card Cannot tell if mine has gaskets around the buttons, but it does not have any in the battery tray. I would be very surprised if my Kingma branded one is any different from the DSTE one, as they both appeared for sale within days of each other.
More than likely the same grip, there is never much in the way of seals on the battery door of the grip, it should fit snug enough so that it would have to be a downpour of biblical proportions to get any water in, it's the buttons and dials that need the gasketry, unless you are prone to dropping the lot in the drink but then it does not really matter anyway...

From the Amazon UK ad, for just the grip alone...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/DSTE-Vertical-Battery-Pentax-Digital/dp/B00RDWJZ9K/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ce_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=06401Q229JWQQJSWYTEV

A firm, comfortable grip for vertical-position shooting with the Camera. Buttons and controls are conveniently placed and easy to reach for greater comfort.
Holds two Li-lon batteries or six AA Battery for extended shooting
The rugged, but lightweight, body design has gasket-sealed controls to resist dust.
When using two batteries, the grip will automatically switch to the second battery if the first becomes depleted. Switching does not interrupt camera operation.
Remaining power indicator

Quite true Gary.

Bottom line, we'll all have to wait and see, Pentax and now Ricoh/Pentax seem to be a company that is willing to take a punt? (K-S1/Q-S1) There is therefore every chance they will try "FF" at some point and why not. They seem to build in better margin than the competition and survive pretty well on selling less and selling to more niche markets, as in the aforementioned cameras which sell quite well in the Asian markets. Every independant or small group camera outfit I talk to likes selling Pentax because they actually make a little on the bodies unlike the big three, I don't think the question shold really be "If" but "When"? It'll happen but what form will it take? Will one model suffice, will it please the majority, will it be a do it all wonder DSLR, that the punters are baying for? How different will it be, will it even be a DSLR? It is going to be very difficult for Ricoh/Pentax to please anybody really with one Unicorn. Unfortunately they are going to have to produce a range of Unicorns, dare I say it, of different colours???
I've looked at the leaves in me tea and nothing...

Let me also stress again, Pentax is losing considerable money in not doing it.
You can't lose something that you haven't first got.
If Ricoh release a Pentax branded FF then they stand to lose money if sales are poor.
As I see it, logic suggests that anyone that really needs a FF camera for their business or work, already has one.
Those who fancy a FF DSLR with the Pentax name on it and are waiting patiently all these years, obviously don't actually need one.
I'm sure this is how Ricoh will be thinking too.

Disclaimer: The above is my opinion only.
It's how I'm thinking Steve, took me eight (or is it nine?) go's with "FF" to realise I didn't really need it, Ok I'm a slow learner! Far more chance of me going smaller, now than larger having passed fifty, with bad knees to boot! As you say, If somebody needed it and I mean truly, as in it was hurting their business, not to have it, and they hadn't already bought a "FF", then they deserve to go out of business to be honest.
If Ricoh/Pentax bring one to the market, I don't see them selling very many, if it's too whacko (Huge K-S1) no one will warm to it, or too Samey, why would they want it? As Richard has pointed out nearly all Ricoh/Pentax's old USP's are now covered by other brands, at the high end. I still feel that Pentax have a lot to offer at the enthusiast end, they pretty much out spec anything at their price levels, something it would be hard to do with "FF", as the like of Nikon have just finished covering all the bases and I'm lead to believe Canon wiill not be far behind, Sony has the small "FF" angle now amply covered too. Happily though Ricoh/Pentax build in good margins which keep them happy and their clients (Shops/online sellers) happy too, somehow they always seem to be discounted and that keeps us happy (Mostly). I don't think a "FF" Camera would save that which to be honest doesn't really need saving, it is desirable for them to have one in the range but not essential.
"FF" DSLR, Won't make or break Ricoh/Pentax...
Nor will it really help them grow, or cause them to shrink...
Mirrorless, in all it's guises, now thats a different matter...
I go likewise with Steve's disclaimer too!

No way that is possible, how would the K3 determine which battery to use? and I can't see how two batteries can physically fit in to the grip !!
Pleased you said it, it's what I'm thinking too but the blurb says it does (Although I reckon they mean the second is in the camera) it also says it knows which battery is depleted and to switch, again that remains to be seen, I've taken a punt but have plenty of ammunition there, if I decide I don't like what I got!

There was no grip option for the K-30/50 from memory, as that was one of the model placement/pricing item trade offs Jules. If this is the successor then there may well not be a grip, but look for that in the K-3ii?

The K-30 had a smaller battery mostly as it was shaped to include the AA battery adapter. If they drop that idea then it could be well juiced up, assuming that box of a grip is empty. Wifi shouldn't need to be on permanently so all in all it could be made to work I think...

Oh and sensor stabilisation in video worked in the K-5 series without the lights dimming when it was activated
He He, get all that Richard, I'm used to K5/K3 (Not quite as good as K5) battery life, I can spend two or three days in the lakes without going near a powerpoint sometimes, and I'd want it to last out, the DLi109's are small and light so it would be no biggie in the end I guess. I was more thinking of the videographers, having that battery fall flat at the wrong moment? Yes the K5 had sensor stabilistion but it did not have all the other doo dads this baby appears to, it all adds up. You are correct in thinking that there was no OEM grip option for the K30/50 but the SoNikCan (Borg) collective offer them on the lower-mid range bodies, so why not? It's another thing to sell to the customer and it would give more than adequate battery performance I'd say, you could get quite a few of those little batteries in a grip, and while they are at it, GPS in the grip too!
The list is endless!!!

Well the price dropped to £55 with the two batteries today, so I have ordered one, I had two Amazon vouchers lying around from Christmas, so I paid the princely sum of £35! From the pictures I cannot see any form of weather sealing but to be fair I am expecting none. It apparantly will hold the the two DSTE batteries which was my main bug bear, having only one battery for the K3. If I go hiking/camping, for the weekend, it's a pain charging in the field, this solves the problem for me, I'd effectively have three batteries in the camera then, which will do me.
Battery spec has been beefed from recent ones I bought, I suspect to match the output of the branded ones, (Li-ion Battery Info: DC 8.4V (max); DC 7.2V (mean) 20.7Wh/2800mAh) Usually OEM Batteries are specced on a mean output and the third party on a maximum output which is why people are often disappointed when they get em home, these should be ok I'd guess...

Agreed.. This and the MX-1 could well be the only cameras I need.
I know what you mean Steve!
However I have a history of not sticking to that, your'e obviously made of stronger stuff!
I think if the price is right this little package could just be too good to ignore, I'm starting to wonder about the battery with all the little extra's, if it has wifi/touch screen/ two card slots and in body video IS, it'll soon munch that DLi109?
Maybe a grip option, that would just be too much!
