Hi all,
I recently purchased a WG-3 to take with me on a holiday (along with my K-x). I found there was not much info available online when I was researching, so I thought I would put up some of my thoughts now I am home again, in case anyone else is considering one.
Firstly - I absolutely loved using the camera. It went with me pretty much everywhere and was a pleasure to use.
Secondly - The picture quality was better than I was expecting. There has always been a thing about rugged cameras that the IQ suffers a lot for the ruggedness, but in fact I was pleasantly surprised.
Thirdly - Thing about accessories! The camera comes with a carabiner strap, but no wrist strap. I bought both a wrist strap and a floating wrist strap as well and had all 3 attached together. The wrist straps had quick releases so I could unhook whichever was not needed as required. It worked a charm and holding the camera/ carrying it around was just never an issue for me. Also, extra batteries are a good idea. It is easy to go through a battery in one day, and so switching over while you recharge is very convenient.
Fourthly - I have found since coming home that photoshop (or other photo processing software), can really add a lot to the pictures. Basically, I would not use/show/print any picture before running it through software first. Not a problem for me as I do this anyway, but if you like to print straight from the camera, then you may find you do not get the best possible picture quality.
Lastly - Overall I would recommend this camera highly. I was a little worried over the purchase as it is quite a lot of money, and I wasn't sure how much use it would actually get, but I was very glad I had it the entire time I was away.
And so onto a few shots. These are just a few samples from the first day or so of the trip. It's going to take me a long time to go through all the pictures I took!

This last one is to demo the difference software processing makes. This is #8 again, but this time straight out of the camera. The picture was taken in 'underwater' mode.

Fabulous shots. Makes me think if only I could have some like this under my belt. Particularly like the 2nd, 8th and 10th.

For things to do, I would recommend a wander round the British Museum. Fascinating things, and quite camera friendly too (at least it was last time I went), so long as you leave the flash off.
Really though, London has so many things that you can fill a day with pretty much anything you can think of.

Hi all,
I am going away in a few weeks for my first trip abroad in many years, and I have decided I am going to treat myself to a rugged camera to take with me (I suspect there will be plenty of beach/ sea shooting opportunities).
I have looked at the market, and it seems to me the most attractive options available now are either the Pentax WG-3 or the Olympus TG-2.
As an existing (and happy) Pentax user, I have a natural inclination towards that option. I also like the idea of Qi charging as combined with a wireless SD card the seals on the camera would not need to be frequently opened up, which seems sensible for this type of camera. I am, however, always careful about such a big purchase and like to check reviews etc before deciding. Unfortunately, there seems to be very little info out there on the Pentax. There are plenty of places listing the specs, but few full reviews. Those there are seem to be patchy in their opinion of the image quality.
Does anyone here actually own one of these, and if so, do you have any opinions based on real world usage, especially in comparison to the Olympus?

The bee picture was taken using a 100mm macro lens. I was leaning against a wall for stability, and the bee was bobbing about on the plants growing on top of the wall. I took a few, but most were not sharp enough as I didn't have a tripod or anything. That one was basically a lucky shot, but I believe that sometimes you can make your own luck, especially if you are willing to keep on trying.
Narcolepsy is a neurological condition that effects many things, but most visibly the ability of the body to regulate sleep/wake patterns. This means uncontrollably falling asleep with little or no warning at any time of the day or night. Another symptom is cataplexy, which causes the spontaneous loss of muscle control when experiencing strong emotional reactions, such as laughing. The condition is quite rare, but there have been a few documentaries on tv about it over the years you may have seen. If you want to know any more about it, there is a website for the UK charity that aims to help sufferers, you can find the website here.

Whilst not exactly a learning difficulty, I personally suffer from narcolepsy, and can definitely relate to using photography as a means to ward off depression issues.
I also find this forum to be both interesting and good willed. The people who are on here seem to be genuine, and interested in other people developing their work. One of the things that makes me glad I shoot Pentax

I got the GPS version, mostly because I think the Qi charging seems like a very good idea for an underwater camera (although as yet I don't have a charger, so it was more of a future thinking decision). I did not actually have the GPS turned on as it's not that important to me, and battery consumption was a concern. Whilst away the battery did not die at any point, but I was charging every night.
Thanks for the comments on the underwater shot. I can't actually claim responsibility for it as I am the one snorkeling, and the picture was taken by a friend.
