Great, light-weight and high IQ. Match it with a set of Limiteds and it knocks so-called high-end compacts into a cocked hat.
I bought a Fuji X-20 as a 'go to' camera for when I didn't want to carry (lug) my K5II. Now the X-20 stays at home with the K5II

SRS are only around 1hr 40mins away by rail from Bexley. The return journey based on the £300 saving is close to £100 an hour!

Could be the 'issue' is as much camera settings as kit lens, so I would start there?
I also have a K20D, and spent some time here and elsewhere researching suggested settings when I first got it, and the changes made quite a difference.
Obviously the settings are ultimately a personal preference, but if you want I'll see if I can dig them out?
As to a lens, others will come along with their suggestions, but fwiw I changed out my kit zoom firstly for the Pentax 16-45, (now only available used, but worthwhile step up), and then the Pentax 17-70.

Might still be good for someone though.

Can't remember the setting off hand as I never shoot with a manual lens, but think it's something to do with 'Using the aperture ring' in one of the C menu's (see camera operation manual).
Also, with some extension rings you need to scrap away some of the paint on the extension ring mount(s) to enable electrical contact between the ring and the camera mount.
Hopefully someone will see this thread and know what I'm going on about.
