I fgear I might just have this problem. Can it be cleaned professionally or is it a loss?

Depends if its a valuable lens/expensive. Not sure of the cost never having come across the problem.

It can be cleaned if the fungus has not etched itself to the surface of the glass.
Price depends on the size of the job (how much glass) and probably more important on the type of lens (assemble/disassemble complexity).

It can usually be cleaned, at least in my experience of a few M and A series lenses with it the glass wasn't permanently damaged. I was charged £40 for a strip, clean and rebuild of a 200mm prime which I considered a very fair price, although I've cleaned cheaper or more common lenses (a brace of 50mm primes) myself as the fungus was easy to get at. Standard vinegar on a cotton bud is a pretty effective means of killing it off without damaging the glass.

Try also Robin at Harrow Technical. He's stripped and cleaned a couple of quite badly affected lenses for me.

The cost really depends on how much fungal infection there is and which of the lens elements are infected.
