.........or not as the case may be. Quoted from a reply to a PDML member:

"Just had a talk with Pentax Europe's former technical service manager,
now 645D service (they will keep that in house) and I learned the
following:
- SDM failure rates are monitored and do not exceed those of other components,
- Pentax is aware of the buzz about the issue but considers it unjustified,
- not every perceived failure necessarily is one. SDM motors hold a
charge which depletes after prolonged (months) non-use. Once
discharged, the lens will no longer focus. The charge takes up to two
minutes to rebuild, i.e. the lens needs to be left alone for that time
while connected to a powered on camera. At times, that may still not
be enough to initially overcome mechanical stiction from the long
sitting period."

Interesting

They're a very good lens, there's one on Ebay now at £10.50 with 2 days and 4 hours left. A boxed one recently went for £90.88. I have one myself but tend to use the Tamron 70-300 LD Di which I got for £65, great lens BTW.

Hi Larry, sorry only just got back to this, basically as above advice. I'm thinking there may be a file sharing/permissions problem going on, but hard to tell without knowing the machine and OS

Sold all mine long ago, prefer leaving things alive and well when I shoot these days

OK, just another wild stab at it, can you save the edited file with a different name or to a different location (directory)

Hi Larry, mmm, I was just thinking, depending on the version of PS you have it may not be able to save jpeg above 8 bits, i.e. you shoot 16 bit RAW then try and save as jpeg, but I think I'm off at a tangent with this one

AFAIK, DNG RAW format was available as an option to PEF in every Pentax DSLR from the K10D onwards but I've not checked the K-5. Glad to be of some help.

Are you converting from RAW to jpeg, and then trying to save the file?

Have you changed anything in your workflow?

It seems you have a left master eye, if you point at an object with both eyes open, then close one eye at a time, whichever eye sees you still pointing at the object is your master eye.

John (who keeps both eyes open)
I keep both eyes open too, one (the right) is looking through the camera and the other is scanning what isn't in the viewfinder. It takes practice.
Same here. My father came from the Lake District (Shap) taught me to shoot from an early age, kept the both eyes open technique to this day, only closing my left eye if there was something distracting me.

Hi John. Found this link on the back of what you said.

So, I'm unusually right handed, but left eyed
That's a much better explanation/test, it's quite common in shooting with side by side shotguns where the shooter keeps both eyes open. If you have a left master eye the common practice if right handed would be to close the left eye, either that or invest in an expensive cross-over stock for the gun which usually has to be custom made. Left handed people with a left master eye would just use a left handed stock of course. Some people actually start out one way when young and switch later, myself included, used to have a left master eye up to age 14-15 and then it switched to the right
