If you can afford to keep the 50 then do so.

I use my SMC-A 50mm f1.7 from time to time in the garden. It's always handy to have a 'prime' to remind yourself about shooting basics, an AF lens lets you concentrate on composition where a manual one, like mine just adds another layer for mistakes.

I nearly bought an AF 50mm 1.4 earlier this year, but the bank wouldn't let me!

Av, I like the depth of field to be shallow when shooting plants and animals.

On the odd occasion I use Sv or Tv, but that's definitely not normal for me.

Stick it in full auto mode, that seems to stop it 'clicking'.

It does on my E50 anyway!

I have one, heavy in the hand but reasonable to use.

Mine has been sat in a drawer for the past year or so. That doesn't mean I don't like it, just that autofocus is more convenient.

If you like Sigma try one of their 18-200s

I have mine on the camera most of the time now.

Yep, #2 for me as well.

The distortion isn't that bad, or it could be my eyes!

Nice tries.
