Using the green confirmation hexagon in the viewfinder works fine for subjects like this. You just need to be sure it's using the centre AF point, and, very importantly, not move the camera after you have focus confirmation.
You could also enable 'catch in focus', but that can be hit and miss as well.

It vignettes below 24mm but is usable on my P30s.
If the body sees it it could give you something to try.

Keep trying Colin, manual focusing takes a lot of effort to get right, but once you get the hang it's well worth it.
A Katz Eye screen would help if you intend doing a lot of manual stuff( note to self must get one some time!).

Keep your eyes open in junk shops and you may hit lucky, I did with a SMC-M 50mm f1.7!
Now on my K1000 film body and raring to go with a film next summer.
Back to the Rikenon, post some real world shots after a walk and let's see how it stands then.

I would recommend the K10 if you want to dive in at the deep end, otherwise the K200 has the same sensor and is a bit more new user friendly.
In general the low end cameras in the K110/ K100/ K10 range have the higher number. Only Pentax know why!

As Pete says, small, light, all use SD cards of any size and they're Pentax!
My E50 takes good shots most of the time, all of hthe time in good light. It takes AA batteries which seem to last forever and it has a selection of (seldom used) shooting modes, including Sports, Panorama and Green.
It was affordable as the models change regularly(that could be a con though!)
Did I say it's a Pentax?

The third one carries the message better and actually has a larger logo which pushes the brand better.
The fourth is simple, clean and straight forward and is, to me the better advert.
But that's just my view.
